Our last night in Bangkok only gave us more and more reason to get the heck out of Dodge. Wakeing up at 5 in the morning to have a soldier looking local banging on our door, only to find out he was Security at the hotel and thought we had called reception. Giving me nightmares that compared to Hotel Rwanda, accompanied by another set of pounding on the door an hour and a half later, (which I decided the appropriate answer was actually staying in my bed and yelling out some words that resembled volume and were quite of the same tone as the pounding on the door, 'to politely let them know they should knock elsewhere'.)
We finally left Bangkok on Saturday and flew into Phuket; which is a province in Southern Thailand. I should preface that by saying, we LUCKILY had a flight. Not only was it seemingly impossible to find a flight out of Bangkok, we miss judged how bad the traffic would be to get to the airport and almost missed our flight. We had all been craving and talking big about the runs we wanted to do while travelling, who knew the first one would
be a sprint in the Bangkok airport to get to the gates 5 minutes before the flight took off. We were pleasantly surprised to find the jet was brand spanking new, I'm talking I haven't sat in leather that nice since I used to date guys for their cars in high school ;-) .
Arriving in Phuket we took a minivan ride to the town of Kata, which we choose because we read there was supposed to be surf there, only to find oursevles face to face with Thailand's one eyed monster. I might be exagerating a bit, but after walking around in this town for over an hour going hostel to hostel to find a place to drop our bags and have some food, the one we found, was being run by the owners 8 year old daughter as they had to go to the hospital to take care of Mom's skin disease, (sure glad I brought a sleeping bag...yuck!). Tanis and I had just finished our showers to hear a forceful pounding on the door. Erik opened it to find one angry little Thai lady; apparantly, we had 'only' paid 800 baht for the room when she
felt that with 3 people we should have to pay 1200. We had a heated argument and decided that we would just leave. We packed up and made our way downstairs to find her very angry European cock eyed husband screaming at us that we were trying to rip them off and that the police were on their way. Now if I have been told one thing to avoid like the plague while travelling, it is the police. Trying to calm Erik down for having his manliness challenged, we (surprise surprise) bargained her down to 200 baht for the showers and high tailed it out of there, (I even forgot by flip flops, we took off so fast!)
So back on the street we were, 3 sad, tired and very hungry Canadians, looking for somewhere to sleep. We must have looked really pathetic because the locals came and talked to us, recommending a nice little place they knew about up the street. We checked it out, told them the locals sent us, forked over some dough, and we had found a place!!!!!! Being happier than pigs in you know what, we promptly went out and ordered ourselves.....those who know
me quite well will laugh, a BURGER and a BEER. Nothing is really like it is at home here, so our burgers were more like burger sandwiches, but I tell ya, it was some serious comfort food.
Wakeing up the next day with full bellies and appreciating that we were out of Bangkok, we went for a run to the beach and all took a huge sigh of relief, now THIS was Thailand. We decided that we would make our way back up the coast and go stay in Patong for a couple of nights before we headed over to Koh Phang for the full moon party. We put our runners back on and walked ourselves to the next beach, Karon, a much bigger and more beautiful beach, and with SURF!!! We were extatic, our first time in the water, and it was AMAZING. I was like a little kid, almost having to be dragged out of the water so we could make our way to Patong.
The only way to get into Patong from Karon is in a Tuk Tuk, the open 'cabs' that we had been avoiding in Bangkok like the stray disease infested cats and
dogs that roam the streets here like Crows in Vancouver. So we bit the bullet and jumped in the first one we could get a fair price from. I have to say it was awesome. A great way to get somewhere fast and feel the clean air of the water bounce off your skin.
Arriving in Patong we got a place right away and sauntered ourselves down to the water; again a huge sigh as we sat ourselves down, and looked at each other and laughed.....we never seem to go a day without learning some serious lessons and having some mind boggling adventures.
We are off to the Island of the Full Moon party tomorrow which I am positive will only lead to more adventures. Hope you all are well, and thanks for all the love being sent. Miss you all like crazy!
Oh and did I mention the Monroe had to go? I guess it wasn't liking my face being covered with sun screen and a nice mixture of salty water and sweat....the hard life I have.....😊
