We arrived in Koh Tao after getting a ferry from Koh Samui via Koh Penang, which only lasted for about 2 hours with nothing exciting happening along the way.
As usual we got off at the ferry terminal and straight away were bombarded by taxi and tuk tuk drivers all shouting over each other and wanting to take us to wherever we were going. We finally opted to go for a taxi with 4 wheel drive and which looked like it could handle going off road as we had heard that the dirt track which would get us to our resort was pretty hard going…..and it definitely was that! After being piled into the back of a pickup truck we were off….climbing up some of the steepest dirt tracks I’ve ever seen and climbing over small boulders, Jade didn’t like this one bit which I found quite funny and I think she clung on for dear life all the way there as we slowly climbed upwards, and then sped up pretty fast as we went over the top of this massive hill!
Me and Jade finally made it there in one piece to the relief of Jade, and it
was definitely worth the hair raising drive……the views were amazing! The resort which we had found for really cheap online (Moon Dance Magic View Resort) is perched on top of a cliff looking out to sea. We were put in one of only 12 bamboo huts (so it’s definitely not over crowded!) all spaced out enough so that it feels like you are the only ones there. With a swinging hammock on the front porch this also made the perfect place to watch an early morning sunrise. Aswel as this we had our own on-suite which was outside the hut and open to the elements, so you feel like you’re in the jungle, which was a bit weird showering in at first but I soon got used to it!
The family who run this place were so friendly and they served some really good food in the bar which was pretty much perched right on the edge of the cliff….there’s also a very steep path going down the side of the cliff to the sea where we did some of the best snorkeling we have done so far, so really there was no need to leave this little area
the whole time we were there and when it came to it, it was a bit sad to leave! But we did after 4 nights and headed back along the dirt track once again to the small strip further down the island where all the bars, restaurants and diving centers are located (and there’s definitely plenty to choose from if you want to get some scuba diving qualifications) and once again we found another small but nice dorm which was fairly inexpensive, and was actually run by a man from Muswell Hill where Jade lives, which was a shock for her….it’s a small world! But we decided to stay here while we planned our trip back to the mainland and this was to become the last island we would visit in Thailand for this trip! But after doing so many islands recently we were both actually really looking forward to getting back to the mainland and seeing how different and fast paced Bangkok would be for us.
