South East Asia – Doggy Travels! Part 1: Thailand

With a belly full of dog food and chartreuse, I had one last dance in Sidebar and bid adios to a year of fun, hard work and the craic with the lads and headed off to the land of lady boys, tuk-tuks and tailored suits.

Once I landed in Bangkok I jumped on the first plane to Kho Phangan for the infamous Full Moon Party which was to take place the next day as I figured it was the only opportunity I would get to experience it.

So my idea of the Full Moon party was a mash up of happy dancing people from all corners of the globe on a small stretch of beach by the waters off Eastern Thailand and it certainly lived up to its name. It turned out to be an awesome experience of happy, mushroomed people and lots of dancing with one hand in the air and one hand holding the infamous bucket! Spent the night drinking with an awesome bunch of people from the guesthouse and also got the opportunity to capture the experience on camera, quite a different environment to take pictures. An enjoyable experience but never quite figured out why one would voluntarily jump onto a burning rope, maybe I just needed one more bucket. I had a couple of days before I left for Ko Tao which I spent exploring the island with some awesome Croatians. We hired some motos and darted around the island finding some stunning scenery, waterfalls and Buddhist temples and just lazing about the beaches. Next stop Ko Tao!

The next few days were spent exploring under the waters off Ko Tao with a lovely Aussie/Spanish couple during an Advanced Scuba Dive Course. The dives were spectacular and the trips out on the longboats through the heavy rain were incredible. Diving around the wrecks at thirty metres while learning underwater navigation skills and then swimming onto the beach as the sun was going down was an experience that won’t be forgotten to quickly! Also pancakes at midnight from the vendor are delicious.

Well they say all good things come to an end so with a hop, skip, jump, a ferry and long ass bus ride later I was in Bangkok taking in the sights and sounds of this lively city and eagerly awaiting the arrival of my travel buddy for the next month Dave. Ended up getting a guesthouse on Khosan Road, a lively backpacker area full of late night markets, odd foods, aggressively annoying tailors and tuk-tuk drivers who enjoy a good scam. So the next two days and nights in Bangkok were an education in all things strange, weird and wonderful, including a tuk-tuk driver getting awful grumpy after I refused to buy a suit, some great statues and temples oh and can’t forget the ladyboys! Bangkok was a lively, interesting city and the islands were great fun but Cambodia was calling!
