This morning we all had breakfast together and caught a longtail boat and a sawngthew back to Thong Sala where we all went our seperate ways. Andy and I caught the 12.00 boat to Koh Tao, even though it didn't leave until 12.40! This boat ride was only an hour and a half. On the boat I (Melissa) had been sitting downstairs at one point. I came upstairs to Andy and told him I had been touted and I wanted to stay where the man had shown me. We had already chosen AC Resort to stay so we said we would stick to that, especially because it has a pool! Just before we got off though we got chatting to a guy who said that there had been trouble at the AC Bar across the path from the resort and it wasn't an isolated incident so we were a little unsure but it had been recommended to us so we still caught a truck to there.
However they didn't have any of the cheap bungalows left so we looked at the AC Resort 2, the bungalows were a nice enough but for the same price we could stay ast the
one the tout had shown me and it sounded much nicer. It was a little out of the way, just up from Sai Ree beach, which is the main beach which has a paved path/road running behind it where all the shops, bars and resteraunts are.
We found Tommys appartments and had a look at the room (not a wooden 'bungalow'). It was lovely! Clean, big with satellite tv including a movie channel!!!
Already it is a big contrast to the other islands we have stayed on as it is much busier, which made a nice change too.
That evening we set ourselves up on www.skype.com which is great! You can call from a computer anywhere in the world for really cheap or if the other person has it on their computer then you can call for free! So we tested it out with a call to our great friends, Tony and Rhonda. Unfortunately the net had just gone down so the connection was really delayed, but since then it has been great.
Back in our room we chilled and then managed to drag ourselves out at 10pm for a couple of drinks in the many bars.
First was Pure where we sat by the beach on bean bags watching the fire dancers with a couple of drinks. Next was In Touch where it was busy. At about 1am we headed back.
The next day was a bit of a nothing as we were both a litlle hung over so we relaxed on Sai Ree beach, went for a little snorkel which was quite good.
Our last day on Koh Tao (9.6.06) we walked about 20 minutes to Jansome Bay where we had been told the snorkelling is really good.
It was a private beach to a posh resort so we had to pay to use the beach but then you could redeem your voucher for food and drink.
We went straight in for a snorkel, where Andy cut his foot, so it was straight back out!
The snorkelling was wicked. We saw hundreds of fish including loads that we had not seen before and some really good coral, as usual there were lots of dead stuff as well. As the water was so clear you could see for miles (not quite) and some of the coral was sticking up from the sea bed like
little mountains with fish swimming around, it was like another world.
We spent a good few hours at Jansome Bay. When we came to have our dinner and redeem our 100 Baht vouchers (which said to deduct 20 Baht "for shower and toilet use") We thought this was a little cheeky of them so we tried to be cheeky as well, so we told them that we wouldn't use the toilet or shower, they wouldn't have it!!! So we only had 80 Baht to spend.
Our way back to our hotel took us through the village of Ban Mae Hat where Melissa spotted a cheap pair of fisherman pants, so after a brief walk around the shops and after chilling in our room for a while, we headed off back so she could buy them.
All day we were contemplating whether or not to leave tomorrow, we were really undecided (we know its hard) In the end we made a decision and bought our first combination tickets to Hue Hin, a clean coastal town south of Bangkok. (this is the first 'transfer' we have used for a while, and thought it would be easier than doing it
ourselves)
Ko Tao made a nice change to the deserted beach that we saw on Ko Pha ngan, it was nice to have that little bit of nightlife and shops to look in. The water was the clearest and warmest we have experienced so far.
