What an incredible day.
The weather was fantastic and boiling hot. I had no idea what the day would hold and James in his "wait and see" mode wasnt giving any of the suprises away either.
The first suprise was breakfast in a lovely bakery on Koh Tao. We ate musuli, banana pancakes, and cake with smoothies and green tea...all the home comforts and western food that we normally cant afford. As you can all imagine it was my idea of perfect!
We then went and picked up our bags and checked out of our accomodation and started walking along the beach. I had no clue as to the plan...still.
James got a longtail boat and I thought for a minute that we might be going to the other side of the island but as we headed farther out to sea and towards the beautiful island of Nangyuan I started to get really excited, James just smiled, which meant yes we would be going there.
I cant tell you how important the weather is when your staying somewhere like Nangyuan. The white sandy beach and turquoise waters almost make for a scene of a carribean island, it
Paradise
arriving at the jetty really is paradise there. However, in cloudy skies the scene completely changes. We were blessed with the best weather we've had so far, virtually a cloudless sky.
We checked into our room, which was infact a hut like house high up on the biggest of the three islands that make up Nangyuan. Two spritely lads carried our backpacks for us and we were treated to aircon, tv and VCD player as well as a really comfy bed (for a change) and a balcony that looked out on the most beautiful view of the bay with pink and fuscia flowers tumbling down the side of the hut. Again, paradise.
We spent the first part of the day openeing my pressies and cards, while James had to watch as I squeeled and giggled with excitement as each thing was unwrapped! Thank you everyone, I loved them all, what a spoilt girl I am! He He, loving it really! After I had basked in birthday glory for quite a while we headed down to the beach.
We hired snorkles and masks and just swam aroung in the bays and was amazed by the marine life. The whole area was teaming
with tropical fish, colourful corals and lots of strange unidentifiable objects and animals. I even got bitten by a curious parrotfish at one point which hurt more than you'd imagine because they usually bite through hard corals so he took quite a nip!
Whilst basking ourselves on our deckchairs James decided to go and get us some cocktails. It was great, relaxing, sunbathing and sipping yummy cocktails on the most beautiful place I can imagine. What a truely wonderful way to spend your birthday.
In the evening we went to the only restaurant on the island, which is part of the resort and had a fabulous meal under the stars. By the end I had quite forgotten that it was my birthday as we eat out all the time, as is the customary thing in thailand and when I heard the waiters singing "Happy Birthday" it didn't immediatly click that it would be for me! Thai people don't have cakes as such, thay have weird sticky puddings made out odd weird things like sweetcorn and beans! But James had gone and asked them if they had anything that could be disguised as a cake with a candle for me
to blow out and amazingly they made me a cake specially out of a pancake type batter mix. It was delicious, a plain sponge completely drowned in chocolate sauce and topped with strawberries and a candle. Now thats my kind of cake!!
Can't believe they went to all the trouble of making a cake for me....so sweet.
After supper, I had yet more suprises. I was told to wait on the beach with the bottle of red wine that James had brought all the way from England and was one of the bottles that we got in Italy. Thats when I called home and spoke to mum, dad and livvy. Sorry I missed you yah, would have loved to have spoken to you too.
When James came back he was carrying a big binliner and some candles. He set the candles out in a circle and lit them, I still at this point had no clue as to his intentions! He then produced from the bag two big lanterns that you light a fire under fill with smoke and send up into the sky and make a wish.
I have always wanted to do one of these things
and James remembered, what a sweetie. We tried to get the first one up in the air but it was made from thin plastic and was having none of it. Eventually it did rise up a little but then later came down again and landed i the sea where it died pretty quickly!
The second lantern was a big paper one, like the ones they used in the film "the beach"- it was so much easier. Once lit it filled with smoke almost immediatlely and when we let it go and it soared way up into the nights sky. I made a wish and we watched it go until it became so small it turned into an orange star. Just amazing. The perfect end to the perfect day of the perfect birthday.
We then sat on the beach in the candle circle just hugging and talking about home and everything. Made a lot of wishes and sipped on our Primitivo wine. Its fair to say that on this day I've been spoiled rotten and have loved every minute, thank you Jimmy for making it such a special day. I will never forget it.
I guess there was
one more suprise.....we didnt have to get up early the next day and check out because James actually booked us in for 2 nights. Normally a place like Nangyuan and the resort where we stayed would be way out of our price range so to be able to stay for more than one night was a real treat indeed.
The next day we did much of the same, relaxing, sunbathing, snorkeling. We also walked up to the viewpoint and watched the sunset with a big singha beer, came back ate yet more food and watched the film "Little Nicky" in bed. Total relazation and laziness - a lifestyle that I feel just a little too comfortable in!
