Penang 2 Koh Samui

I know lot of people would like to know how to travel from Penang to Koh Samui (vice verse) the cheapest way. The answer known to me is by mini van. I did some check on train & flight . For train, timing is not good , you will need to stay one night in Surat Thani (the train from Butterworth arrive at 10:05pm) . For flight , you can either go down to KL & took a direct flight by Berjaya air to Koh Samui or take air-asia from Penang to Bangkok and fly to either Surat Thani or Koh Samui depend on your budget.

After considering the time & $$ , we decided to travel by mini-van ...

Cost : MYR$70 one way/pp from Penang to Ko Samui . So for round trip , it costs MYR$140 per person.

Logistic : We took a 10 seater mini-van, the pick up point near the Mosque of Sebarang Jaya. After arrived in Hatyai, we transfer to another mini-van/bus in Hatyai to Surat Thani. We board the Seatrans ferry from Donsak Jetty to Ko Samui which took 1:30hr.

Penang Departure Time :

Ferry from Donsak to Koh Samui
5:30am (Malaysia time)
Koh Samui Arrival Time : 6:30 pm (Thailand time)

Ticket : We get the ticket from one of the travel agent in Bukit Mertajam . For those in Penang they has ticket counter (28-29, 34) in the Sungai Nibong bus terminal.

Accommodation : Samui Penisula Resort & Spa . Note that we using our RCI (timeshare) exchange. Thus only paying the exchange fees.

TravelLOG of the day :

Penang 2 Hatyai : The mini-bus pick us up at the bus stop beside Sebarang Jay's Mosque at 5:30am. Arrived in ChangLon for breakfast after 1:30 hr ride . I also get my $$ change to Thai baht here . The rate is equivalent to some of the money exchange in Penang.
Surprisingly that's lot of tourist crossing the border today , may be is due to school holiday in Malaysia.
By the time we arrive in Hatyai , its already 9:30am . The driver drop us at a travel agent shop (Cheong Wang) to transfer us to another mini-van to Koh Samui.
NOTE: You can get your return ticket here, it cost the same (MYR$70 pp)

Hatyai 2 Surat Thani : We depart at 10:30am , stop around 12pm at a shop in no where for lunch. I order Thai fried noddles which cost 40baht while my wife order a mix rice with 2 dishes costs 45baht. its certainly over price 😞 ... but what can you do .. its the only shop around . We slept most of the trip Zzzzzz ... the whole journey took around 5:30 hr .

Surat Thani 2 Koh Samui : We were transferred to another travel agent at Surat Thani & later to Donsak to board Seatran Ferry heading towards Koh Samui. It took 1:30hr to across the sea.

Koh Samui Jetty 2 Resort : The ticket from Penang to Koh Samui covered till Koh Samui Jetty in Nathon. So one need to find his/her own transport to the hotel. I did a private car arrangement (from the travel agent in Surat Thani) to pick us up from the Jetty in Koh Samui to our resort : Samui Penisula Resort & Spa in Choeng Mon (around 45min drive) . It cost 500Baht per car. Note: the taxi price is pretty expensive, although it had a meter , no one is actually using that in tourist place 😞 . We had our private car stop at 7-eleven for us to pick some drinking water and breakfast before heading towards our hotel.
