Shark Island
Looks like Emerald Bay! Another beautiful day in paradise. I am not really sure what day of the week it is or the date, but I know we are still in May. It seems like the only way that we find out anything resembling the date is during the day and late at night in Thailand they have fights. Fighting seems to be a huge part of their culture, tons of promotions for the fights and trying to get peope to attend. They have fights Sundays, Tuesdays, and Fridays. It helps a lot to know that because when the pick-up trucks drive by blairing on their loud speakers "FIGHT, FIGHT, FIGHT TONIGHT!! GET SOME REST, STARTS AT 9". The trucks slow down traffic in both directions (as the roads are narrow and can really only accomodate a single lane, with taxi and mororbikes parked on both sides of the street). Eventhough these loud trucks are quite annoying, they are helpful to me as they have the date and day plastered on the sheets of plywood holding up their advertisement and obvious liking to their favorite fighters. (Jenny's Random Thoughs, again, sorry.)
The morning are very beautiful and the evenings are wonderful as well. It
Sairee Beach
Great Views! is this afternoon two hours that can't quite agree with Mother Nature. You wake up to a vibrant hot sun, go for a walk to enjoy the quiet streets before people start to load the beaches. Then you lay out for a couple of hours before the clouds start to roll in around noon or 1pm. We can see the dark clouds in the distance as they approach from the North and vacate the beaches quickly as the clouds hover over the drenched tourists as they all scatter for shelter. Rain falls very quickly and pounds on your head and shoulders. Today, the clouds looked further than they actually were. They swooped in with a vengence. We were unprepared and took cover underneath a huge leafy tree. We covered up with our clothes, regrouped, and took a breezy stroll back to our bungalow. I decided to fill you guys in on what was going on (as I finished my book on the beach today) and Don decided he couldn't put his book down. So, here we are again.
We decided on Saturday morning after the weather never really subsided as we had hoped to move on to Koh Samui.
We checked-out of our bungalow, Don got himself a new book from the same people who rented us our motorbike "Good Luck Motorbike Rentals and Book Exchange". We dropped our bags with the Good Luck people, decided that we still had two-and-a-half hours to burn, so we grabbed our snorkel stuff and headed East to Shark Bay. The weather wasn't perfect, but we thought that the other side of the island may have a better, more calm wave situation. We made the drive up the dirt road and down to Shark Bay without a hitch. We plunged in the warm water ready to find some good sea life. Unfortunately, when the rains come, they cloud the salty water (something with the salt density with the fresh new rain). It wasn't too bad, maybe 15-20 meters clear view. We saw a few very, very large fish (can't remember their names). I saw a very large Barracuda. These waters all around Koh Tao were swarmed with them and we became very framiliar to the Barracuda (long, skinny fish with little sharp teeth). Barracuda, not exactly what I would call a cute fish!
We swam for a while, saw tons of fish, then
Boat of Luxury!
Choppy ride over to Koh Samui was smooth and fast with comfort. decided we better check the time. We got back in and we still had a little time to kill. We hopped back on the bike and drove up to where we could get a good view of shark Island. We were told that sharks hadn't been spotted for a couple of days, so we were hoping that we could get a glance at a Manna ray or something extravagant like that... our time was limited. This storm really threw a curve in our snorkelling plans. Oh well, still had tons of beach time. No Manny rays to be seen that day either.
We are in Koh Samui. The night life really takes off here, unlike Koh Tao (mostly local fisherman and tourists our for a swim). It has been fun watching people at night all dressed-up fancy. Us in our nicest beach attire, walking into night clubs, really has been fun. People are very nice here. Food is the same everywhere you go. The menu never seems to change from one restaurant to the next. Only the waiters change and the place mats are different colors. Regardless, water is warm and we may stay another day.
Our plan right now is to take a ferry boat either tomorrow morning or the next morning and head West. We are going back to cross the Main land to the other side to reach the islands on the west (the ones that were hit by the Tsunami on Chrismas 2004). We will start with Koh Phi Phi (Don's favorite island), they are said to have the best snorkelling there in all of Thailand. We may finish off our trip there, or if we have time towards the end, make a stop for a couple of days in Koh Lanta (closer to the coast and on the way back anyway). We just hope that the weather cooperates with our plans and makes the last leg as enjoyable as the first.
Oh yeah, did I mention the rediculously gigantic spider that was in our room yesterday. This is the second place we have seen this spider. We took pictures and he is on a 2x4, holding on to it with plenty of bend in his legs to spead-out another couple of inches. He almost was the size of Don's hand. I've never been scared of bugs or spiders or anything like that, but this thing could send a tingle up the spine of anyone. I'm going to look him up on the internet and see what kind he is, it was amazingly, beautifully, freaky! Okay, he's Probably Heteropoda Venatoria (domestic huntsman spider). So they say.
All right, going to add pics now.
Take Care and Keep the comments and messages rolling.
From the number of hits that we have had for each individual blog, seems like there are quite a few of you checkin' us out, drop us a line, let us know what you guys like to know about and what bores you. Looking forward to some input.
Thanks, Jen & Don
