After 16 hours by taxi, bus, 2 converted pick ups and a boat we made it from Bangkok to Fishermans Village in Koh Samui. The bus journey wasn’t too bad (although describing the bus as VIP might be stretching things a bit) and we were entertained with a few dubious films before lights out. We did get a laugh when a Dutch guy thought his mate “had got off the bus for a pee” and been left at a layby - he began pleading with the Thai driver to stop the bus but it got lost in translation and the driver tried to explain to the worried chap that the bus didn’t go to Phi Phi! Disaster was averted as the “missing” guy emerged from the toilet at the back of the bus - oh how we laughed.

Arrived in Surat Thani about 5am to be dropped off at the Thai equivalent of a greasy spoon - no bacon and egg rubbish here though and we had nice stir fry and rice for brekkie before being whisked to the pier in the back of a pick-up for the 8am boat. We were totally knackered by the time we got to Fishermans Village so just booked into the first reasonable place we found - got a decent little bungalow by the pool and collapsed onto the nearest sun loungers for the rest of the day.

Both went for a Thai massage (which lasted over an hour) to unwind after our journey then went to the Happy Elephant for dinner where we were entertained by a local father and son guitar duo playing 60’s guitar classics (could’ve been us dad!). Booked a room in The Red House (which we’d seen on the net before we left) for the next 7 nights where we intend to chill out and relax. It is a great little boutique hotel with only 4 rooms and is right on the beach with unbeatable views from our balcony and the roof top terrace.

We’ve found some good little stalls (mobile kitchens strapped to mopeds) to eat from but being mobile you’re never sure where you’ll find them - we like a challenge! Feeling brave we went to a rustic little place for dinner where we had a lush meal of noodle soup and Thai curry plus drinks for less than £2 and then retired to our balcony to watch a lightning storm. (Although unlike someone we know we resisted the urge to try and photograph lightning by counting the time between flashes - you know who you are. Mel. : )
