Motorbike gang!
Left: Becky and Scott
Middle: Ryan and Megan
Right: Jason and Angela Our time on Ko Samui consisted of beach, beach and more beach. Of course there were stressful times too: forcing ourselves to get out of bed at midday; choosing which Thai beer to drink; not being able to have a massage on Sundays, as it is the masseuses day off; which beach to ride to on our motorbikes; etc... Yes, motorbikes! One day we decided to do some exploring of the island. At this point, our Austrian and Dutch friends had left and it was Jason, Scott, Becky, Ang, Ryan and I. Us girls had initially decided to have our own bikes, but after test driving we thought we would enjoy riding the back of the boy's bikes instead. We went to Chewang Beach where we enjoyed a game of volleyball. We recruited other people on the beach to play and soon we had two teams with subs. That night once we returned to Mae Had Beach we went to a bar called "Chill Out Bar". Our waiter was an awesome guy named Po. He was so friendly that he even sat down with us to take our order and chatted with us. There was really good dance music playing and
Po explained that his friend was practicing DJ-ing for the full moon party the following night. We were all keen to practice our dancing for the party as well so, we pushed the tables aside and made our own dance floor! We had a fun evening hanging out Po and his friends and dancing up a storm.
The next day was the full-moon party. In the early afternoon we took or bikes to Buddha Beach. There, as the name depicts, there is a huge Buddha statue. At the base of the statue there was a monk raising money to funds the construction of a new temple. For 30 Baht we each bought a brick and put our name on it. These bricks would build the new temple.
For the rest of the day we relaxed and tried to save up our energy for the long night ahead. What better way to relax than to enjoy a Thai massage right on the beach!
That night we had a few drinks at Chill Out bar again. Just as we were about to make our way to the pier to catch a speed boat to Ko Pha-Ngan, where the full-moon
party is held, the clouds burst and huge gusts of rain blew across the beach. We made a run for it, but we were soaked within seconds. It was raining so much that the boats would not make the journey to the other island. We waited at the pier with many others, all bursting with anticipation to get to the party. Now, being with Jason and Scott there is never a dull, or silent, moment. Soon they started their own karaoke night and nearly every on the pier joined in. A half hour or so later, we were interrupted by the captains saying they would continue to bring people to Ko Pha-Ngan.
The full-moon party...where do I start? The flaming jump rope, the table dancing, the DJS, or the buckets of grog? Well I'm sure I got your attention at the flaming jump rope, so let’s start there. At the beginning of the night when there weren’t as many people (5,000 people as compared to 15,000!), one of the bars set up a giant jump rope. It was a good 8-10 meters long. Then, they drenched it with gasoline and lit on fire! Then people started to jump in!
Crazy! Neither me nor Ryan tried, but Jason got in on it. Surprisingly no one got burned!
There were about 6-10 DJs on the beach, each playing different styles and beats. It got very confusing if you stood between DJs, as you could hear both! Some bars had giant tables people could dance on: we definitely dominated those!
The whole scene was pretty crazy. Nearly everyone was painted with neon glow paint, the designs smearing and running due to the rain. Each bar was decorated in lights, and in the ocean were giant structures spewing out fountains of ignited color. As the night progressed people were passed out in the sand. As the tide came in, Scott helped someone move further onto the beach as to not be swept to sea. Luckily, we kept more on the sober side and could be amused at all the sights.
Inevitably, the group got split up. At about 3 a.m. Ryan and I went off the beach into the town area and sat on the sidewalk to people watch. It had been raining off and on the whole night and we started to get a bit cold. We found an air-conditioned that was blowing hot air out onto the street and sat in front of it to warm up. I think we probably sat here an hour just people watching and eating pizza. At about 5:30 a.m. Ryan and I took the ferry back to Ko Samui. Believe it or not, this was early to be leaving the party!
The day after the full-moon party, needless to say, was full of laying on the beach and minimal activity. This was our last day on Ko Samui before heading to Ko Pha-Ngan!
