Hello avid readers, its long overdue but finally another update!!!! So we find ourselves on the Island of Ko Samui on the east coast of Thailand. We arrived here from Ko Phi Phi on the westside of Thailand via a ferry over to Krabi where we stayed for a couple of nights the only exciting thing in Krabi was trying to find a road that didn't contain a seven eleven shop, they must have the highest concentration of seven eleven shops in the world in Krabi. From Krabi we took a bus to Surattani where we got the short ferry ride over to Ko Samui.
Upon arrival in Ko Samui we hooked up with 10 travellers and got our own songthaew. Its amazing how you bond so quickly with fellow travellers, you have so much in common and all want similar thing out of your travels. We managed to all book into a guesthouse which was owned by a norwegian guy who had a massive love for the Beatles, the guesthouse was even called Penny Lane. Unfortunately we didnt realize that a) the guesthouse was in the middle of the redlight district and b) next to an open air nightclub
which had music blasting till 4am. We were physically moving in our beds due to the bass coming from the club. We promptly moved the next day. :-)
Team Canada (Nicola and Sammy) had a bright idea and decided to challenge Team England to a drinking challenge that night! Never one to say no to a challenge the boys excepted. The reality was the drinking challenge never really took off we drank a few beers etc around the bars and on the beach, but didnt feel we drank that much. However the girls were lightweights and Nicola was out of action the next day due to a massive hangover ha haa!! Morale is dont challenge the English to a drinking game! (well unless your irish!)
The Actual Island of Samui is roughly cicular in shape with the central part being almost uninhabitable mountain jungle. There is one main road that goes around the island. We felt we should get out and about and do some exploring, as we were staying in Chaweng Beach which the most touristy place on the island and was reminding us a little of Pooket, at night the beach road was ultra busy buzzing
to the sounds coming out from the bars and a crazy colourful mix of people!
The only way to really explore the island was to hire some scooters, this proved to be the most memorable moment on the island and to be honest the event that took place with these scooters will probably go down in the top 5 funniest moments of the trip if not the funniest. I will let Mikey explain this in his own words and I did warn him aswell!
Over to you Mikey.....
"some of you may or may not be aware... ive never driven one before, so we get the scooter off the rental guy thankyou very much , he shows me how it all works blah blah blah , whatever (prob where i went wrong!) he then talks to kev, i put on a little throttle...nothing happens, i give it a bit more juice and let go of the brake, next thing i know my bikes pulled this massive sodding wheely, i narrowly miss kevs head and find myself swaying dangerously into a thai persons market stall , they laugh at first not realising that this baby wasnt stopping, they suddenly
look quite worried , but its ok , im a good driver, so i took the bull by the horns, done a running jump onto my bike somehow i avoiding fatality and having the record for the first written off scooter in 5 seconds, luckily kev is still alive also , i didnt even turn around to see what the rental guy was doing, cos i woulda gone nuts if someone just rinced off on my scooter like that! kev and paul says he was pissing himself , which is good , and those 2 also made a 10 minute stop up the road to laugh....alot. I bet the rental guy wish he had seen my driving license now haha!"
Funny stuff, we saw the whole island in the day and visited the main beaches, saw the Big Budda statue and managed to get lost a few times when we strayed from the main road looking for waterfalls.
All in all Ko Samui was a nice break nothing special, and would suit someone who was wanting a resort style holiday some of the resorts that we went through looked really nice but way out of our price range!!
So Next stop? Its the Party Island Ko Pha Ngan for the Half Moon Party.
