One Is Never Enough
The first cocktail of the night with many to follow. Well this was a night like no other and unlikely to ever be repeated. We first went out for an Indian meal at our usual restaurant, and then we went for a few cocktails to get things started. We left the bar at a quarter to twelve to go to the fusion club but we did not actually make it because of all the fire works going off in the street. The Thais go mental it would seem and the sky was a light with fireworks for a good half an hour or so.
The only problem is they are not big on fire safety and would probably be arrested in England for such behavior. On several occasions we ran for cover in the bars and restaurants.
One girl or it could have been a bloke actually in a red mini skirt and high heels decided to light a massive firework in the middle of the road, the firework was up to my knees in height and about fifteen inches wide. There was lots of traffic going passed, the place was full of people and very close to several outdoor bars and food stalls.
She tried lighting it several times and
I just got a really bad vibe about this one and insisted that we go further up the street and stand in a restaurant.
I was right to do this because when it finally went off it barely left the ground and shot out sideways all over the road and into the neighboring bars it is amazing that nobody got hurt.
The Thais are no strangers to this sort of happenings but for us English folk it’s quite alarming. They insist on setting fire crackers off all over the road too which are equally scary because of the noise they make. I don’t know about New Years celebrations it sounded more like world war three had broken out when I played the video back. The fire crackers frequently hold the traffic up but nobody seems to mind at all.
In Thailand they also like to set lanterns off into the sky, basically it’s a big white material lantern shaped like a cylinder with a cup inside which they set fire to. They then hold it up in the air and move up and down to generate some air then they let go of it and it fly’s off into the
night sky.
The Thais believe that if they do this their troubles will fly away with the lantern. Sounds lovely and it is when it’s done on the beach or something like that but in the centre of town it’s a lot more hap hazard because it gets off to a shaky start in between the buildings just a short distance above many peoples’ heads then it gets stuck on an electricity cable for what seems like an eternity then eventually it makes it off into the sky, by which point I am long gone. The Thais just seem to think that this just adds to the fun of it.
After all this excitement and it was safe to move on we found ourselves in a place called The Zodiac Bar which is a bar with a difference it was a lady boy cabaret bar with entertainment all night. We watched all the shows and drank cocktails with all the girls I mean blokes sorry. Well it’s really hard to tell the difference they were stunning and much more beautiful than many of the girls in the girly bars.
We saw a few men pay thier bar fine while we
Fabulous
We nick named her fabulous because she was just that and very funny too. were there and take them off to a hotel for a quickie. Bar fine by the way is basically a fee that they pay to get the girls out of work it’s normally about five to seven pounds then they pay the girl about a fifteen to twenty upwards depending on what they get up to.
You are probably wondering why we know so much about it, when we first arrived we were baffled as to why we saw fat ugly men from England (Farangs to the Thais or water buffalo’s) with such beautiful Thai girls. Every restaurant here is full of them so we decided to learn more about it out of curiosity and bought a book which we both read and now see the whole situation in a completely different light.
We are now like anthropologists when we go out observing the Thai life and watching what we have learnt unfolding in front of our eyes it’s really interesting.
Anyway the girls took a shine to Mark and I think Mark took a shine to them, you can see from the pictures it’s really hard to tell that some of them where once blokes. They have got boobs
and really great figures we thought they were just fabulous.
By the end of the night we had quite a group around us I am not quite sure what they had in mind or where I fitted in. I don’t think they knew where I fitted in either. One of the gay blokes and he was a bloke this one he was not in drag, tried to hook me up with another guy to take me to the club next door. I think he fancied his chances with Mark, Mark had a girl on his knee by this point the girl in the pink dress, she really thought she had pulled and was flirting like mad. She kept looking over at me though; it was a very bizarre situation. Mark was oblivious to this as he was trying to get his picture taken with all the performers and he was getting rather drunk by that point. In the end I went out for some air and Mark came rushing out thinking I had left and we both decided we had had enough it was six o’clock after all and walked home.
Mark was shocked when I told him what was
going on in the bar and he did not believe me then all of a sudden the girl in the pink dress sped passed on her moped wondering if we wanted a ride home.
I think Mark then conceded in a some what drunk way that I may have a point and we laughed about it all the way home.
