Hey everybody! Falling behind a bit with the blogs..sorry! So we stayed on Koh Phi Phi for 4 days, having taken the hellish overnight journey from Phangan :-( night ferries aren't cool unless you're sleepy Will, with his magical ability to sleep endlessly anywhere!
Having arrived about midday, 16 hours aftr we lft Phangan we checked into U.S hostel, about 5 mins from the centre and the pier.. Crazily, Craig the Canadian guy had recommended this place as a basic place to stay, and by luck we ended up there! Even weirder was, on our first 'try to get to know the place' outing, we were spotted by Heather, Lucy and Claire - 3 English girls we had met on Phangan when they stayed next door to us! We arranged to meet up th next day as we were way too exhausted to do anything major at first!
We noticed straght away that everything was way more expensive...for example our room was vry basic but cost 800 baht a night between us..and this was very cheap for the island! It was also pretty obvious that the tsunami had done irreversible damage, as in patches thre was just barren land
and rubbish.. (have got a postcard of what it used to be like - completely covered in palm trees and so beautiful!) We were a little disappointed by the beach there as it was quite rocky in the sea, the water was pretty dirty and the sea went out so far.. But undeterred we bought a frisbee and proceeded to suck at it for the next 4 days...so bad!
We met up with Oran and Shai the next vening, having gone to bed at 9 and woken up about 2ish I think! Crazy! They recommended we do a boat trip for 600baht each which included lunch..and so we booked it for the next day due to all the bars being closed that night - easier to handle the early start!
The boat trip was so incredible! First we went to Moya Bay on Phi Phi Ley (the beach from the film, 'the beach'!).. This was a little disappointing but we had a nice snorkel anyway! We then snorklled in some more bays as we circled the islands.. The scenary was stunning, and jumping of the roof of the top of the boat (8m apparently!) was awesome..got it on
'I hate that monkey'
Will was all smiles until he saw one of them going through his bag! Ha! video too! Next we moored off monkey bay and kayaked to the beach, where the monkys were busily eating and clowning around! Had to kayak there and back 3 times due to forgetting cameras..hard work! Anyway, the monkeys were good, Will seemed to fall in love instantly!! And the beach there was one of the nicest we've seen! Although in comparison to Bamboo Island (our next stop) it was nothing! This island was tiny, but the epitomy of paradise! Coral reef under you as you approach with wonderful fish, followed by nice sand and palm trees..the pictures won't do it justice! Finally we stopped at shark cove where we swam with some Reef sharks! Some were pretty big..maybe 5ft! It was just such an awesome day!
That night we went out with the English girls, and met up with Oran and Shai again briefly..was an ok night, nothing special, but at this point we were comparing everything to Phangan so! The club there, Carlitos, seemed full of English idiots (these were the only people we met - probably hadn't had enough to drink!) and was just so cramped! - made Walkabouts dance floor look huge! Anyway was good sitting
Our boat - jumped of the roof over the wooden banister
Boat looks a bit rusty and old but she's seaworthy..just around beforehand in Reggae Bar watching Thai boxing...th professionals were awesome although it looked staged.. And when people from the crowd came up to fight it was usually painfully funny! So that was a highlight!
We spent our last day buying some stuff for you guys back hom, looking around... and we bought our ticket to Kuala Lumper for 1050 baht which wasnt bad..overnight again though :-( 22 hours of travelling to get there! Oh and we bumped into Sofia and Andreas again, the Swedish coupl from our dive course in Koh Tao! Crazy crazy crazy!
Anyways, Phi Phi was nice...but not that exciting for us..mainly cos we were still recovering from Phangan! The tsunami has obviously affected this place so much, and lots of shops and stuff seem really tacky, all the buildings are obviously quite new, whilst lots of the open areas still seem pretty wrecked..guess tropical plants don't grow back in a year and a bit..!
Off to KL, speak soon, take it easy, lots of love, Chris xxx
