So this is it...our final hours of our trip. The reality it setting in when we just packed our bags for the last time...weird. Even though i am an expert packer now. But we are really excited to go home back to good old Britain..and when your away for this long you even start to miss the place! honestly!!
We were discussing what we are looking forward to the most and its the littlest things...i can't wait to be able to brush my teeth with tap water, and drink out the taps for that matter...to have my own bed back, not be sharing in dorms or dodgey thai hotel rooms wondering which aminal is under your bed tonight. I can't wait to have my own bathroom which is clean, has decent toilet paper and a shower cubicle (Thais do not believe in toilet paper or shower cubicles...just chuck the shower on the wall and let the whole bathroom get soaked!). I'm looking forward to some good old English grub! to be able to order in a restaurant and know what to expect...know you won't get ill from what you eat, or wonder where it ice cubes came from...our parent's Sunday
dinners, home made meals and decent take aways!definantly appreciate the small things now.
I think most of all i'm looking forward to not being a tourist/backpacker for a bit...wear make-up again, not get ripped off cos im a westerner. The more we think about it the more we feel its the right time to be home again...we have had an amazing adventure the last 28weeks and loved every mintue of it. Thailand it incredible and we loved just lying on the spectacular beaches for the last couple of weeks. After Ko Samui we went to Ko Lanta on the west coast of Thailand and spent 2 nights in a lovely bungalow there but in Lanta we discovered low season really means deserted season. no one was there and we were pretty stranded for a couple of days...so we quickley escaped to the breath-taking Island of Ko Phi Phi.
Arriving by boat from Krabi we realised how amazingly beautiful this island is...it is limestone so the colour of the water is the brightest of blues. The Island is really two large hills with sheer cliffs and rainforest..connected by a large sand dune which is where the town is. This
island was amongst the worst hit during the Tsunami especially with everything packed into a connecting dune. you can imagine how the wave just had torn it apart. today there are many tsunami signs around signaling evacuation routes.
Apparently just after the disaster the government said they would make the bit inbetween the islands into a large park..and banned people from building on it again...but they never put it into force and it is now chocker block with shops, restaurants, hotels and everything..all newly built since 2004.
We decided to stay up in the hills a bit in a rainforst hut...very interesting souns on a night time! and most of the time we just lay on the spectacular beaches melting during the day then having lush meals eating the many restaurants on the night times. We were really lucky with the weather cos apparently the week before was just rain, rain and more rain!
So after 5 days in Ko Phi Phi we caught and overnight bus back up to Bangkok...which was no bother! got off at 5.30am and couldn't check into our hotel until 9am...so what does a tired backpakcer do at 5.30am in Khaosan road?...go to
the pub! and that is wha we did headed for a couple of beers amazed at how full the pub still was...people from the night before watching the sunrise with a beer in their hands! and for some reason every white male on the premises seemed to have a thai girl (one can only presume) dangling from their arm! its a strange world but makes for good people watching!
So after a day of our last souvenir shopping..last couple of prezzies...our bank accounts successfully emptied we had our last meal out last night. and settled for the last night of our 'holiday'...good grief can't believe its over!
Getting on a plane to London in a few hours...so excited to see everyone again...then Lake District here we come!
See everyone back on home turf!xxxxxxxxxx can't wait!!
