Me Fire dancing - Ko Phi Phi
I was pretty good thanks to a little dutch courage from my 'bucket' After meeting Damien at Bangkok Airport we caught a plane straight to Krabi which is south Thailand the gateway to the islands on the west side of Thailand. We decided to go to Ko Phi Phi and stayed for 4 nights. It was wonderful to relax in the sun. drinking, eating, swimming - the water was so warm. I have been staying in guest houses that only have cold water so the warm sea felt a little strange on my body.
The first day we just laid around, checked out the island. Phi Phi was completely destroyed from the Tsunami in Dec 2004 but seemed to have been rebuilt and mostly looks as if nothing happened.
On the 2nd day we did a tour of the surrounding islands and alot of snorkelling. The underwater world in this area is spectacular. We went to Maya beach where the movie 'The Beach' was filmed and to shark bay looking for sharks. Also to Monkey Island which i stayed away from and Bamboo island when was simply a national park right on the beach.
The 3rd day was banana lounges, ocean swimming, fresh ice coffees, beer, pool swimming, dinner, night clubs.
There are ALOT of bars/night clubs on Phi Phi, i would say over 20, and we had to be inticed into the one that only sold 'buckets' for drinks.... Potent Whisky / Vodka / - you name it, its in it drinks, served in a little bucket... see pictures.. That night was just a tiny bit messy!!!!
After Phi Phi we headed north, spending around 8 hours in Suri Thani waiting for the overnight bus to take us to Hue Hin (the Spa Capital of South East Asia) we visited a market and Damo got to experience his first sighting of freshly cut pig, chicken feet, every animal organ you can think of in neat piles ready to be sold. Afterwards i found out that he had discreetly covered his nose and mouth. I am quite used to the different sights and smells although i have learned to only breathe through my nose so i dont 'taste' all these specialties!!
Our overnight bus dropped us off in Hue Hin at 3AM and we booked into a guest house made of wood right on the beach with a long wooden balcony. It was quite nice and basic and finally
we had a chance to sleep off our hangovers. Damo spent the afternoon in a Day Spa having a massage while i went for a walk along the beach. It was very windy there and the sea rough. The Day Spa was very posh, I was served water in a champange glass while i waited for my lovely friend to finish.
From Hue Hin we caught a train, bus and tuk tuk to get to Kanchanaburi (60ks west of Bangkok). I went to see another waterfall (7 in total in this area)... Lowlight - Scary, yellow eyed Monkeys were waiting for us at the top. Highlight - I found another waterfall with a cave behind it. We had to dive into freezing water filled with fish that bit our legs and feet, but it was worth it. I feel like a jungle girl when i am around waterfalls... from a previous life obviously.
We also went to Hells Fire Pass, The River Kwai and on the Death Railway. This was a really moving / somber afternoon.
Back to Bangkok for my 3rd time - each time seems to get better and better - We spent 2 nights
next to Khao San road. A bohemiam area which is one closed off road that has a night market and cheap, cheap food....
50 cent Pad Thai
70 cent Banana shakes
10 cent BBQ Pork sticks (never to eat chicken again, Pork is my meat of choice now!)
50 cents Banana pancakes
3 for 90 cents spring rolls
(Also, we went to a ping pong show run by the mafia... enquire if you will to me personally and i will tell you more!!!)
I really loved the food over there. I have tried to recreate some of the noodle soup dishes i had but it's just not the same. I definately have the travel bug and I am only home long enough to save and go again.... February / March is my plan!!!
Unfortunately the Visa rules changed in Thailand from 1st October. To work in Thailand now you have to be sponsored, organise from outside of the country and one can only stay in Thailand for 31 days then they have to do a border crossing to stamp passport and one can only do this 2 times and then leave - making it 3 months
per visit.
So i decided to come home although i had a really great time and........ I cant to go back!!!!!!
Until then, thanks for tuning in, sorry about spelling mistakes and unreadable sentences (sometimes i was so exhausted after a full day of exploring, i didnt have the effort to proof read... Oops!!).
See you soon.
