Well, I was pleasantly surprised by how smooth our journey from Ao Nang to Koh Phangan was. We started out at 6am on Sunday morning, and it took around seven hours in total, but there was very little waiting around and we were promptly met from the boat by the Milky Bay Resort staff.
We paid for a garden-view bungalow, but we're so close to the beach, it could technically be classes as sea-view. Our bungalow is beautiful! We spent the afternoon on the beach. I walked out a few hundred meters in the sea, and the water never reached my hips. Bliss.
In the evening, we attempted to walk into town but ended up taking a taxi half-way because it's so far. We ate at a western restaurant/pub, then walked back. It took over an hour. En route, a dog started chasing Sophie and nipping at the backs of her legs! Funny stuff!
When we returned, we sat on the beach front with a drink, then headed to bed.
On Monday, we took a boat trip with Lomprayah Tours to Koh Tao and Koh Nang Yuan. After the awfully-organised trip in Phuket, I was a little
apprehensive, but was pleasantly surprised. We were driven to the ferry port, given wrist bands, drinks and snacks, and asked to wait a short while. We were then guided to the boat, given a brief itinerary, and off we went.
The staff were absolutely amazing, especially the main guide, who was constantly cracking jokes. The guy driving the boat kept swerving so that the people at the back got wet (I think he knew them) which was funny. We were kept in constant supply of water and soft drinks throughout the journey.
Arriving at Koh Nang Yuan, we were given 45 minutes free time before lunch. We lounged around for a while, then sat down to a wonderful buffet meal. After lunch, I chatted to the woman leading the tour and pointed out how many Korean tourists there were. She said the island is a very popular honeymoon destination for Korean couples. Hearing the language at every turn was almost like being back in Korea. Almost.
Koh Nang Yuan is an e-co resort, and in keeping with the its environmentally friendly lifestyle, guests are asked not to bring plastic bottles or cans. Koh Nang Yuan is actually
three islands, linked by the water current's sandbar formations. It was very crowded, but that didn't take away from the stunning beauty of the place.
Next, we were given an hour and a half's snorkelling time. The marine life was amazing! Among others, I saw bannerfish, angelfish, trumpetfish, and what looked like small barracudas. I marvelled at the beautiful corals and a gigantic sea urchin, as I floated at depths of at least a few meters.
After this, we were taken to a snorkelling spot just off the coast of Koh Tao. There were less fish than at Koh Nang Yuan, but the coral was just as amazing. It was extremely deep, and I made sure I was always alongside someone else. If a shark attacked and I was alone, I would most certainly be toast. I figured if there were a few of us, I'd have a better chance of not being the one eaten. Safety in numbers an' all that.
We were brought back to Koh Phangan around 5pm, although I don't remember much of the journey since I slept through most of it, only waking up whenever I tilted sideways.
That evening, we
had dinner at the Milky Bay Resort restaurant, then turned in early, both wiped from our early start and full-on exposure to the sun. We're hardcore like that, you see.
Today, we chilled on the beach. I ventured out in the water once, then slept on the sunbed (in the shade, of course). I only moved for breakfast, lunch and then to come back and shower. Now I'm relaxing on the front porch before living it up at Haad Rin tonight for the Full Moon Party. Bring it on!
