Koh Phangan is famous for one night a month..... The Full Moon Party, but we will get to that later!
We arrived and had to find our own way to the Lime & Soda resort in Thongsala. We got a taxi and checked in... We were a little bit dissapointed with our "bungalow" until we saw the location. All I can say is AMAZING!!! The most beautiful beach looking out to Koh Samui and we were in the quiet area of Thongsala, where most of the locals live as appose to Haad Rin where all the tourists go.
We learnt from our previous experiance in Koh Samui that mopeds were the way to go so we hired one and set about exploring straight away. Being a lot smaller than Samui it didn't take long to navigate the entire island. We did have one near miss when just over the brow of an extremely steep hill the road came to an abrubt stop! When we looked at the map after this, we found that the road we were trying to go down was in fact a dotted line which meant it was to be completed!
We immediately fell in love with the
place and spent most evenings at the little outside bar looking out to sea and planning our lifes and business ventures in Koh Phangan.
It didn't take long to meet some great people. The first being Stewart from Killmarnock. We got on well and had similar interests the main one being rugby! ! We spent many an evening with young Stewart at the bar and going out to eat and even persuaded him to get a moped and explore with us. By this point even Charlie had a moped so all 3 of us were bombing around the island in convoy.
Next we met Leila and Martin from Southhampton. They were travelling around Indonesia and Thailand for their Honeymoon. We got on really well and Charlie and Leila had so much in common they were like 2 peas in a pod! All 5 of us spent most of our time together and were all on the island for the same reason. The Full Moon Party!
On the Wednesday evening we started off at the hotel bar with a couple of "teapots", the hotels version of a drinking bucket. We were attacked by some Irish girls with UV body paint. We
painted each other before heading to the bus to Haad Rin. Martin was painting a "Scotish" flag on Stewarts back and had already finished it before he realised he had actually painted the cross the wrong way round! !
Just before we got on the the bus we heard an almighty crash. One of the Irish girls had enjoyed a few too many teapots and ran straight into a glass door injuring her face, leg and hand to the extent where she had to be rushed by speed boat to Samui hospital for stitches in her face and leg and surgery on her hand. This effectively ended the Full Moon party for all 5 Irish girls and so they checked out and left the hotel.
With 10 people seated in the taxi/truck, me hanging on the back and Charlie and Leila squashed in the front passenger seat we made it to Haad Rin in one piece. At this point we realised Leila and Martin had paid for all you can drink at Club 9. This worked to everyones advantage as we all managed to get drinks from there for free (and bought them dinner the following night to compensate).
The
Full Moon Party is effectively a massive beach party, and we saw it all! Drink, drugs and even sex! All the blokes were urinating in the sea and after a while the girls were doing the same, only metres away from where people were passed out or sleeping. There was music blarring from every bar and building along the beach, drunk people everywhere all covered in UV paint and even a sleep area for those who needed a lie down! October is the low season but there were still 10, 000 people on the beach. In the high season there are 40, 000-50, 000 people! ! It was packed as it was. We struggled to imagine it with that many people there.
The next day was spent waking up in the early afternoon, grabbing something to eat and generally recovering. . . Especially poor Stewart who had a little too much Thai whiskey and overdosed on their dodgy version on redbull. He had to sleep all day and the next night before he looked human again.
Charlie and I extended our stay at Lime & Soda until the following Monday when we had to leave the country as it was
the last day on our visas. We waved goodbye to Leila and Matin for them to continue onto Chiang Mai and us to spend our final day with Stewart. We rode the mopeds to a bar/restaurant on the lake that had a rope swing and inflatable trampolines and climbing iceburg. We spent a good few hours here watching the rugby, messing around in the lake and having lunch. Stewart left on the Sunday morning by which point we realised that we needed to get out act together and find a way out of the country before being fined! We found cheap flights from Koh Samui to Kuala Lumpur departing the following afternoon.
And so the adventure continues. . . . . look out for the next installment - KL, Malaysia.
