The next morning I set out in search of a guesthouse near the beach - Resort after resort there was no luck everything was full for the full moon. After an exhaustive search I gave up and ended up catching a cab to meet Petra at the ferry station. (Introducing Petra) I met Petra 2 years ago during my French immersion course at University of Victoria (BC). It was random how we met each other 2 years ago (killing moths) and again how a facebook status sparked a reunion. She had just finished doing a dive course that I really wanted to do but timing just wasn’t right. She had picked up two friends Yan (German) and Immanuel (Portuguese/Swiss) along the way and found a nice place through a tout. The place was 900 Baht including breaky and a lush pool, the only thing is pictures can be deceiving and it was at the north end of the island. After my exhaustive search earlier I decided that any place available would be a good idea. We hoped in the back of the van and headed up a scenic hilly drive for about 20 minutes to our resort (Haad Salad Resort). It
was pretty lush, I mean there was a grotto, huge pool and the rooms themselves were solid again sometimes touts can lead to good things.
After we floated around the pool for a bit we headed to eat at the Bamboo Lounge, a pretty nice place nothing to rave about but cheaper that most joints in this area ($2 to $4 mains). For dinner we ate at the same place (how original) and then called in a early night after watching a couple of movies. The next day we were in store for a treat, breaky was a lush all you can eat buffet with eggs any style cooked fresh and pancakes in shapes of elephants, butterflies and anything you could think of. We stuffed ourselves almost to overcapacity as the next couple hours we were sooo tired from all the food and we had to take a kip. We didn’t have to eat lunch though so it was a plus.
It was another day of lounging at the pool. For dinner we decided to rent scooters and head down to town and Haad Rin, where the full moon party is. Heading down to town wasn’t that bad,
going up and down some pretty steep hills but no biggie, we ended up eating at this outdoor food court place where chicken satay was 10b and shakes were super cheap too. Next we scooted our way to Haad Rin it’s about a 30 to 45 minute ride and it was intense, up super steep hills where at some points I had to push with my legs and round some hairpin turns all with pickups speeding up and down the same road. Needless to say at the end of it I was glad to be alive, something about driving in the pitch of dark on a scooter in Thailand that just screams suicidal.
The next morning was the day of the full moon! Oh was I stoked - woke up did the whole breaky thing then took a nap straight after cause I knew I was going to need it. Woke up went to lunch at you guessed it Bamboo hut and then played some kings and drank some brews. Headed out to the full moon around 9pm that night in a pickup truck, we met some Scottish lads in the truck. They were also on a spin the
world type of trip. We got to Haad Rin and Yan was the first to get a bucket of mystery whiskey, coke and redbull for the low price of 140b. The buckets literally came in sandpails! Right after we headed to go buy some paint! Me and Petra painted ourselves good - I wasn’t the best painter and we definitely messed up who should have the full and the moon but it worked out after a few buckets. We then headed down the beach.
I ran into the Scottish lads and stopped to talk to them for a bit, they were surprised to see how fast we got painted and I scored some glow sticks from them. When I started to walk down the beach I couldn’t find anyone after all there was just 10,000 partiers on the beach. We totally didn’t make a meeting point so I was walking up and down drunk for about 30 minutes, it felt a lot longer though. I kept on getting stopped by fellow Canadians which was cool. Just as I was to give up they found me - safely to say we made a meeting point after that. After some dancing
and losing a few more people (insert awkward turtle) I realised I lost my camera case. It had about $100 cash in it. Frantically searching where I thought it was I realised I was SOL. A girl noticed I was searching for something so she aided in, when I told her what I lost she was saddened, she tried to give me 1500b which is like $50 but I’m like no!, I mean I was really drunk and skint but I wasn’t about to accept money from someone. She insisted and then shoved it in my pants. We did some stages dancing for a bit then went exploring.
I can’t remember what time it was but we got a text from Petra and met up with her, got some delicuse banana pancakes and headed home. I was absolutely gutted I passed out cold in the truck. The next morning I was in bad shape. Communication was done by mrrr, and meer meeerrr! But had to wake up to catch the free breaky. After breaky though I slept till 3p then spent some time at the pool. We decided to try somewhere new for dinner and headed down to the
beach, afterall our resort was beach front but we hadn’t been to the beach once. There were a lot more restaurants and bars along the beach. We had dinner at our hotel - lush tuna steak and corn with salad. Priciest meal yet at 400b ($13) but it was well worth it.
The next day we headed to Ko Samui. After the rave reviews and descriptions in the Lonely Planet we were sadly disappointed. No fault of Ko Samui though it was all mother nature. It rained for the 2 days we were there so there was no beach time or anything. It would have been fine with a little drizzle but this was torrential downpour. Nothing really to talk about here ‘cept one thing I STARTED MY ASSIGNMENT, nothing really else to do in the rain. We did eat at some well shabby places but what can you expect for $1 a meal. There was one place the ‘Islander’ that served me microwave bread with cheese and chicken wings for breakfast. After 2 days of crappy weather and food we headed on a bus, bus, ferry, bus to Bangkok. We left at 1pm and got to Bangkok at
6am the next day. The first bit was a bit rough as we were getting on and off and I sat next to this well chubby lad that took up half my seat. But as soon as we got on the Bus to Bangkok I popped my Xanax and passed out. The first hour I was like its not working but ohhh it worked. I missed the 2 pit stops we made and when we picked up a new traveller - introducing Lisa - she is from Vancouver, she reminds me a lot of someone from home but can’t put my finger on it.
up next: goodbye thailand
xx
