We had to drag ourselves out of bed for breakfast. When we arrived instead of being given a menu we were told we could have anything we wanted so Matt decided to have an omelette and I asked for a pancake.
There was a small table set out with coffee, toaster, fruit and cereal, and the terrace was empty apart from us. We were starting to wonder if we were the only guests there.
After eating we decided to take a walk along the beach. Although we'd walked the length of it the previous night it had been too dark to see. There were still ropes strewn up the beach a few inches from the ground but at least in the daylight we could see them coming.
Outside our resort the sand was made up of coral pieces and shells. It was a delicious shade of white, and the ocean was the most turquoise we’d seen since leaving Bora Bora. There were waves crashing up against the beach and we could see plenty of dark patches of coral just out past the long tails for anyone brave enough to endure the waves to get out to it.
We took a walk from our end of the beach right to the other end. Even in daylight and without heavy bags it was a bit of a trek in the soft sand - I still couldn’t believe I’d done it with more than 25kgs on my shoulders!
The sand became softer towards the northern end of the beach. The resorts all looked quite rustic - a mix of bungalows and bamboo huts with the odd bar dotted in between. It really was a beautiful beach - it was just a shame that it was very windy and the sea was so choppy.
On our way back down the beach we stopped for a drink in a little bar.
Matt found some weird things floating in his coke which he said must have come out of the ice. We’d gotten used to having ice here as we knew the main resorts wouldn’t serve tap water ice when it’s not safe to drink, but this made us think again.
We headed back to our hotel and spent some time on the sun beds. The wind stopped it from getting too hot but I was worried that it
also stopped us from knowing when we were burning so eventually we went back indoors.
We decided to go back to the nearby Castaway resort for dinner seeing as their menu looked but decided to stick with Changs to drink rather than risk more coke with floating bits.
Matt ordered bbq fish - todays special was tuna - and I ordered some bbq chicken with Thai style chilli and corriander on top. Matt’s was crispy and it took two of us using forks and knives to prise some of the flesh off the whole fish that was served up to him. When Matt had finished his meal my chicken came out along with a personal apology from the guy running the restaurant who told me the chef hadn't cooked it to his liking so he’d sent it back. I had high hopes for it as he promised it would be perfect. I cut a big chunk off and gave it a try. It brought tears to my eyes. I love spicy food but I’ve never tasted anything so hot in all of my life. That’s coming from someone who likes vindaloos and jalfrazzis! I downed some Chang to
wash out the heat and gave it another try thinking that maybe I’d just eaten a particularly potent bite. I hadn’t. I had to scrape off as much of the sauce as possible and then just managed to eat most of it but it was uncomfortable and wasn’t nice.
When we’d finished I was glad to escape to get some sea breeeze in my face to cool off and give my taste buds a rest.
We walked back to our room, enjoying the peaceful beach around us. There was no bongo man in sight tonight thankfully.
Back in our room I was reminded of another frustration - our aircon wasn’t working properly. Matt had mentioned it to resort and they’d offered to move us earlier in the day but he’d decided to see how we got on for one more day. All that was coming out of it was a tiny draft barely enough to blow my hair out of place even when I was sitting underneath it. We turned it on and spent a hot night laying on top of the covers frustrated that we hadn’t taken up the offer to move earlier.
