Christmas Day with my sisters!
L-R: Sally, Molly Lucy and Me! Happy New Year to you all!
Ok first things first, before we carry on about what a great time we're having, yadda, yadda, yadda, we too are feeling the post Christmas/January depression. Unfortunately it's not because of the cold and the dark evenings but the fact we're coming home at the end of the month - boo! Obviously we can't wait to catch up with everyone, but we can't believe how quickly these 9 1/2 months have gone. In fact I feel that being away for so long and coming back home in the middle of winter makes our winter blues doubly worse! I tried to persuade Martin that we should stay out longer but unfortunately our money's run out and I have been told that we're "grown ups now and we need to get jobs". Dagnamit!
Anyway, we had a fantastic Christmas and New Year in Singapore. My family (Mum, Dad, 3 sisters and not forgetting Grandma) braved the 12 hour flight and the airport delays at Heathrow due to the pea souper, to come and celebrate with us.
Christmas this year was certainly one to remember. We had a delicious Christmas dinner in the Long Bar
at Raffles hotel and most importantly Martin asked me to marry him on Christmas morning. After close inspection of the ring (which I hasten to add he managed to keep from me for some time and is very beautiful) I said "yes"! Although I have been informed by certain people that "I must be crazy" and "what am I doing marrying an unemployed beach bum", but as I am too I can't see why it'd be a problem. As long as we don't end up like Wayne and Waynetta slob we'll be ok!
Apologies, I've gone off on a tangent. After seeing the family off after 8 days of gossiping, overeating, drinking, partying, shopping, Martin and I had a day to ourselves in which we caught up on some much needed sleep! New Years eve was brilliant - we were in the Fullerton Hotel which was too posh for unemployed bums like us! I think the free flowing champers took it's toll by the end of the night, but none the less we had a fantastic time. It was so lovely not to have to wait in line for your coat at the cloakroom and then brave the freezing
New Years Eve in Singapore
It certainly looks like the free flowing champers has taken it's toll! p.s check out the ring! outside in another queue for a taxi.
After all the over indulgance of the festive period we decided that we were in need of some serious r and r. We booked ourselves on a very cheap Tiger Airways (Singapore's answer to easy jet) flight to Krabi in SW Thailand. We spend a couple of days in Ao Nang but being peak season, it was absolutely full to the brim with Swedish tourists. So, we left the beautiful blonde and bronzed people in our wake and jumped on the next boat to the island of Ko Lanta. Now this is what we were looking for! We managed to get a room on the beach front in a lovely little hotel with views of the Andaman sea - perfect! We liked it here so much we've extended our stay. Watching the sunset then walking down the beach to find a nice little place to eat dinner, without the hoards of people is our idea of heaven! So many people say that there's something about this island that gets under your skin and they're so true.
No, we haven't been completely idle since we arrived almost 2 weeks ago. We've managed
Sunset in Ko Lanta
I can think of worse things than Watching the sunset from our sunbeds! to tear ourselves away from the sunbeds and spent 3 days diving, which was awesome! Got to see some cool stuff that we haven't seen before: Leopard Sharks, Octopuses and got to explore some cool caves.
Ko Lanta is a very idylic and serene place, perfect for the intrepid traveller. Beautiful beaches and glorious sunshine, maybe a little "rustic" but that's what's so endearing about it. Unfortuantely, we don't think it'll be long until this place ends up like the neighbouring island of Ko Phi Phi, which is were The Beach was filmed. Apparently it has a reputation of being rather noisy, a bit dirty and crowded. We're heading there next for a couple of days so we can make our own minds up.
Unfotunately all these islands were hit by the Tsunami a couple of years ago, it'd be difficult to see it now as many of the hotels, bungalows, bars and restaurants are back up and running. Unfortunately alot of the land was sold by the local fishermen and farmers to make quick money, as they quite literally lost everything. The big resorts took advantage and are now popping up all over, which is a real
Now this is our kind of place!
Now can you see why we decided to stay longer on Ko Lanta! shame. Luckily Ko Lanta hasn't been over developed... yet.
Anyway, got to go, my sunbed awaits.......
