I think on every traveler's odyssey, at least in Thailand, an attempt is made to 'get away from it all' and find your own private little paradise. Koh N'Gai was our place. After an hour long boat ride from Lanta, we were there. Our guidebook said something about this island being Robinson Crusoe-like without an indigenous population. Whatever that means, we soon realized the comforts we appreciate so much on more traversed islands were no-where to be found here. No convenient stores, Electricity is only on from dusk to dawn, no cars, no motorbikes, no ROADS!! You get the picture.

We walked across the white sand beach to get to our resort. My conversation with the manager went something like this:

me: Hello, can I rent a motorbike to get around the island?
him: No motorbike here.
me: OK, well, where is the road?
him: no road here, use beach like road!
me: OK, is there a store where we can buy food.
him: no store here, nothing here except resort.

Since everything has to be brought in by boat from the mainland, we were really at the resort's mercy. All meals and all food had to be bought on site. Drinkable water was like liquid gold!

So, we spent our time mostly on the beach. Ely sent me about the island to coral coconuts. Using a 20 foot bamboo pole, I finally fished a couple off a stubby little tree. Not as easy as it looks. Equally as diffucult to open them using a tiny dull one inch knife.

The west side of the island was filled with 3 resorts, so it wasn't as quiet as expected. We decided to hike through the jungle to get to the other side. We found a quiet little resort and basically spent the afternoon there, sharing the large beach with 1 or 2 others. Our pulses were at all time lows.

The island is surrounded by whitish coral, making the water crystal clear. We could walk out 500 feet and still have water barely up to our waists.

Such a beautiful and peaceful place. Some of the local people have lived there their whole life. Can you imagine how simple life would be? I envy them in that regard!

We celebrated our 2 year anniversary here. Didn't think I would find us half way around the world, but here we are!
