Today is Dec 15, 2005 (Thursday)

We arrived in Sukhothai on Dec 11. On Dec 12, we took a walking tour of the old city of Sukhotai and saw a lot of ruins. Sukhotai Historical Park is a UNESCO site. Lots of wats (temples) from the Sukhothai period. Some are very impressive. We visited only the big wats within the old city wall on foot, and took about 400 photos. (Some must be good, I hope)

Please check on this site for good information on Sukhothai:

On Dec 13, we rented a motorcycle (125 cc with 4 gears) and toured the outskirts of the old city of Sukhotai. This is just to continue the discovery of the old city of Sukhothai and the rest of the ruins. It costs 150B (About $4) to rent a motorcycle for the day, plus we drove around about 70 km and used only about 50 cents of gas. At first Gary was a bit rusty on the motorbike, especially the shifting of gears, but after a while, Gary was more used to it. We were going about 45 km/h and felt the wind and thought it was quite fast already. The roads in Thailand are quite good, very few rough spots. The shoulder is broad and cars are gentle, so motorbiking is quite safe here.

On Dec 14, we rented the same motorcycle and drove 57 kilometer to the nearby town of Si Satchanalai Historical Parki, which is also a UNESCO site with similar ruins. We drove almost 140 km the whole day and used 45 Baht of gas (just over a US$1) and Gary enjoyed the driving more today and not as tense. Since we used almost 4 hours of travelling to Si Satchanalai and back, we have only 4 hours of sightseeing. Luckily, we are on bike so we pretty well covered all the wats we want to see. Before I can post my photos, here is a site with some photos you can take a look. Gary thinks he has better photos than that website, you will be the judge 😊 http://www.chimburi.com/sisatch.htm

On Dec 15, we took a day trip by bus to another nearby town about 74 kilometers away. This town is called Kamphaeng Phet Historical Park and again is another UNESCO site, again with similar ruins. Again, we almost have the whole park to ourselves.

After 4 days of ruins, we found most of the wats have pretty much the same design. The Buddahs all face East, and because we started on late mornings on all 4 days, we did not have a good photo on the Buddah images. However, the weather was so nice on all 4 days, and there were so few tourists, we enjoyed the leisure walk very much. Each of the site has its own flavour and we enjoyed each park very much.

As far as food is concerned, we are getting more daring. We visited many street stalls are liked: BBQ chicken (25B for chicken leg), BBQ sausage stuffed with rice (5B), roti (5B), PadThai noodles (15B), Spicy sausage (20B), green mango (10B), pomelo (10B), fresh lotus seeds (10B for a bag), BBBQ chicken parts (5B, taste great, but with little meat and the dogs ate the rest after we are done with it).

Tomorrow we will go to Mae Sot, which borders Myanmar (Burma). From the guidebooks, the market is supposed to be spectacular with many Burmese goods for sale. So, we will see.
