I am starting this Blog on Sept 28 - the day I returned to the US and have access to the internet more reliably. The notes you see are taken as I travelled and were recorded in retrospect. I hope you enjoy my travel as much as I did. SEPTEMBER 17, 2007 "How many time you come to Thailand?" "OOOOOOH - you love Thailand too much!" "Bai Nai?" It'll be a 24 Hour transportation jaunt when all is done ... that's if the bus arrives on time in Mae Sai. It began yesterday on Sukhumvit, Soi 7 when I left the Park Hotel and headed to the Sky Train Soi Nana station. It was 5PM on Saturday and the girls were getting ready for work. There were even a couple of friendly LadyBoys who greeted me ... read more

Its been ages since Ive written. Sorry (Dad esp!) After the farm, I headed straight to Mae Sai to the orphanage that I discovered 3 months ago. Its not going quite how I expected, though. The team of volunteers here is really hard to work with and Im feeling extremely underutilized and unappreciated. Funny, the same people were begging me to come back before and now that I get here, they're nowhere to be found! I think I'll leave here in a few days and head to a temple for another Vipassana meditation retreat. I feel a bit guilty for running from the problem, but then again this may be the last time I have that option. Its such an uphill battle, I just cant be bothered with it now. I'll have plenty of chances to ... read more

While most of the tour group went off to Laos to drink snake whisky (basically whisky where a dead snake has been left in the bottle, apparently it's the Laotian viagra), I went off with Janneka, a Canadian girl who I met on the tour, to go explore the Opium Museum. That place was pretty cool. It had folk stories about how opium came to be. Basically all of them are variations of the following: Once upon a time, there was a girl who was incredibly beautiful but smelt really bad, so nobody would marry her. This girl died, and as requested, she was buried in a flowerbed. Above her breasts grew tobacco plants (because it tastes sweet, like milk...?), and above her nether regions grew opium poppies. I'm going to take a wild guess and ... read more

Chaing Mai to Golden TriangleJason & Kirstyn O Left Chiang Mai behind and headed north to the region known as the Golden Triangle (the Golden Triangle Encompasses several countries....a rich opium growing region well known for a history of opium smoking and production). First night we spent in Chiang Rai. Great markets and had a lovely feast on street eats. The next day we caught the local bus up to Mae Sai....a lovely little town on the border of Thailand and Myanmar. Stayed in a guest house overlooking the river and Myanmar for two nights. We hired a motorbike here and drove around the region looking at the numerous caves and little villages. One of the caves was 6km long but we only managed to get about 1km in as we only had one torch we ... read more

Thailand visas are good for 30 days. Then you either have to apply for a 10 day extension or leave the country. The great thing is that as soon as you leave the country you can turn around and come right back in for 30 days, no charge. As my 30 day visa was coming to an end, and since I was already in Chiang Rai, I decided I would take Taco Bell's words to heart and make a run for the border, to Myanmar (one of the most oppressed countries in the world.) Since the trip from Chiang Rai to Mae Sai (the town on the Thai side of the border) is only 1.5 hours, I figured I would take a local bus (costs about $1). I mean how bad could it be? Oh ... read more

Hei taas, Lahdin siis pohjoiseen alkuperaisen suunnitelman mukaisesti, bussi oli kaksi tuntia myohassa taas kuten olisi pitanyt olettaa, tiella oli 4 onnettomuutta, saavuin tanne kuuden maissa. Siita siis bussiasemalta motorpaikin kyytiin ja rajalle. Harmi vaan etta viidelta raja menee kiinni ulkomaalaisilta, onneksi tapasin jonkun pampun, ja han ystavallisesti lahetti intern, eli harjoittelijan burman puolelle hakemaan leimat passiini joltain burmalaiselta kaveriltaan, eli nyt olen teoriassa ylittanyt rajan, vaikka kaytannossa riitelin koko sen ajan motskarikuskin kanssa hanen veloittamistaan taksoista. Janna maa. Tahan saakka ajattelin etta ai kun kivaa, kaikki jarjestyy ja niinpain pois, kunnes selvisi etta tasta kamaisesta rajakaupungista jossa ei nay kuin juopuneita sotilaita ja harmaa mekong joki ei lahde yhtakaan bussia yhtaan minnekaan kello kuuden jalkeen illalla.... eli... read more
