Our last adventure ended with Capri feeling down and out after a stressful day and a freezing cold overnight bus ride. It left us thinking: Maybe she wasn’t up to adventure travel? Maybe she wants to join a package tour on a plush bus? Maybe she wants warm sun and surf down south? After a few hours of rest, Jarrod surprised Capri with some pretty purple orchids and sweet mandarin oranges he found at the local market while out on his early morning walk. This seemed to lift her spirits and while she admitted she had some doubts last night, the sun was now shining and she wanted to continue as planned. It was going to be a good day! The next morning we planned to visit an elephant conservation center located 30 km out of ... read more

We went elephant trekking today. The policeman Miday drove us out there and spent the day with Kim, Louise, Laura and myself. We had lunch, looked at baby elephants then rode them! It was really cool. I think when my mom comes here and i have to go there. Hope you all enjoy pictures. Love, Emily... read more

After Chris said her good-byes, and we wished her well on her merry way back to SA, we decided to see a little more of the North of Thialand. Just South of Chiang Mai you find a great little town called Lampang. We decided to head down for a night or two to take in the sights - meaning temples - as well as visit the local elephant sanctuary. It was a great way to waste a bit of time before we cross over into Laos, and enjoyable as we were lucky enought to spend a night in an amazing guest house just off the river. Nats and I hired a bike and set off to the Elephant Sanctuary, some 30 odd Km's away. Upon arrival we were treated to an elephant bath, and then on ... read more

I really like Lampang, a small city with virtually no tourist attractions about an hour south of Chaing Mai. After the tourism ridiculousness of Chaing Mai, it was a welcome change. All Lampang is known for is horse-drawn carriages (left over from Portugese teak traders) and of course, teak. Although there are not a ton of teak structures left, there were still a few including my wonderful guesthouse, where I hope I go back some day. The other thing I think Lampang should be known for is its dozens of hair salons. This is a city of about 40,000 people and I think ther is one hair salon for every 10 people. Since none of the salons seemed particularly busy, I really don't know how they stay open. One of the few tourist attractions near Lampang ... read more

Elephant riding. What more can I say? It was just the most amazing experience! We visited the Elephant Conservation Centre near Lampang, northern Thailand today. As some of you may know, the elephant happens to be my favourite animal, therefore this was especially exciting for me. Firstly, we watched the elephants bathe, with their trainers scrubbing at them until they were squeaky clean (well, relatively less smelly at any rate!). Then they were put through their paces, showing the mesmerised audience (ok, so admittedly it was mainly me who was 'ooh-ing' and 'aah-ing') of tourists how smart this large land mammal is. Highlights included an elephant race, playing the xylophone, staping on inflated balloons to pop them, and elephant painting!! Naturally, these are all behaviours that would be displayed in the wild... But anyway, this one ... read more

Riding a songtheaw Back of truck; two benches We're in Lampang now! Well, today was another transportation day. At least we arrived at our destination by about 1PM this time...so it wasn't all day on a bus. We arrived at our guesthouse without much fanfare. Today's Guesthouse (Baan Fai) is gorgeous. It is huge and used to be a former weaving village. Upon arrival we basically dropped off our stuff in our rooms and then headed down for lunch. Once again I was on the waiting end of things and basically got my lunch almost last. Oh well...it was well worth the wait. :) Then after a bit of exploring around the guesthouse we had a few options on how to spend our "free time". 1) Take a horse drawn carriage around town. 2) Go to ... read more
