Hey All,
Up and at ‘em early this morning. My guy Banana…… let me insert that most all Thai people have a long name, and everyone has a short nick name they use, like Job, Nan, and my guy today his nickname was Banana…… anyway picked me up early and asked if someone else could join us and of course I did not care. She was a nice girl from Italy and I am embarrassed to say I don’t remember her name. We visited Doi Inthenon National Park which is named for a former king of Chiang Mai, back when Chiang Mai was its own kingdom. All these smaller kingdoms joined together under one king later and became the Kingdom of Siam, which I am sure you have heard of if you have seen the movie The King and I, and later changed the name to Thailand.
Anyway, I regress, this park is really nice. Visited 2 waterfalls, the highest spot in Thailand which also happens to be where the Pagoda of King Inthenon sits. A pagoda is where the ashes are kept. Then we went to the fairly new King and Queen Pagoda’s, a spot on top of
the mountain where the current King and Queen will end up when they pass on. That place is magnificent.
Made a few photo stops and had a nice lunch. Once again the weather was perfect, so looks like I have lucked out hitting the end of the rainy season.
When I got back I ran out for some good eats, and stopped at my favorite little Rotee stand for a banana rotee. This lady runs this little stand at night and they are so delicious. Finally included a pic.
I know this is quick, I have a lot of packing to do. Got my laundry all caught up by some cute little Chinese lady for $5, folded all nice and neat. She even made perfect little squares out of my underwear. The owner of the guest house has set me up with an early tuk tuk ride to the airport at 5:30 in the morning. Ugh, hate that early on vacation, but needed an early flight to get to Krabi in time to hitch a ride to Koh Lanta. Someone told me that the tropical storm that hit India so bad, did a side swipe on that
side of Thailand on its way to India. They said things were a bit hard hit, but that was about a month ago I think so hopefully things are good when I get there. If I get to Krabi and find things are not good, I can switch over to the beaches on the other side like Hua Hin or something. I will repost the map so you can get an idea of what I am talking about. So to make a long story short, I need to get to Krabi early so I can figure out what to do.
I guess when I get a chance to update, then you can find out where I end up. If I do end up in Koh Lanta, not sure what the WIFI situation will be so, be patient if I disappear for a few days. I will do my best.
I will say I have loved Northern Thailand. Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai are very livable places and the food is just delicious. The people are so warm and friendly and I promise I will return here some day.
Happy Travels, Don

Thanks for the memories...
I surveyed the top of Doi Inthanon for the radar station in 1968 and then returned after college to build the road to the top of the mountain and the radar station in 1974-75. My wife and I lived in Chiang Mai and just loved the place. I took my three children there in May 2007, and they were amazed. I also took my son to Krabi and Railey Beach in 2009 in conjunction with a trip to China and Vietnam. I blogged about these experiences in case you are interested. Continue enjoying Thailand!
