Hi everyone, I've not been writing on the blog for a while because I was quite busy and a bit lazy to be honest! But I'm back. I'll stay in Suring, a small town in the north east of Thailand for 3 or 4 days, to catch up with the blog, work on my photos and take a bit of rest. So! Last post was about Songkran in Chiang Mai, which was quite amazing. I decided to stay in Chiang Mai after the Songkran to enjoy the town being dry!!! The town is really quiet and nice and full of impressive temples. Watching my pictures, I realize that I don't have any pictures of the town itself... that'll be a good excuse to go back there! But anyway, I had a fun time visiting the temples, ... read more

As hinted at the end of my last blog, my latest group trip endeavour.. a four week Thailand Explorer trip with Real Gap's Gap Year for Grown-Ups gets off to a pretty shakey start. Our group of ten, largely from the UK have been attracted by different aspects of a varied programme on offer .. there-in lies the problem, as the minority who are attracted by shopping and minimal exersion (..!) are quickly in conflict with the majority of us who want as full and active a programme as possible. A strong tour leader is required to keep everyone on track, and that is just what we don't have - just a good local guide to take us through the first week and two days of trekking in a national park.. the jury is out on ... read more

How yis, sorry it's been a couple of weeks since my last entry here but I've got a good excuse. I've been in the back end of nowhere, a reasonably small village called Sanom about an hour outside of Surin town. When I went to use the only computer with internet about a week ago to contribute here, when loading up some photos from my SD card, I managed to get my SD card an STD (see what I just did there?). So once I realized that the computer was bugged out, rather than compromise email accounts/passwords etc... I logged out and aborted the mission. However here I am now and I will try recap on as much as I can, it's been a pretty chilled but yet quite enjoyable 14 days. So where to begin? ... read more

I re-named my elephant Howard, despite him actually being a lady. Elephant poo is massive and just kind of floats around you when you take them to be washed in the river. Howard tried to roll me off into it a few times but i clung on for dear life! To say the accomodation was basic is an understatement. On the 2nd night i felt a cockroach crawl over my hand (Joe i think i spoke too soon about the lack of cockroaches so far!). I nearly broke that night and spent the early hours cowering in the corner with my headtorch and a flip flop as my weapon of choice :0( The toilet was a hole in the ground and the shower was a bucket and ladel. I wont even get started on the ant ... read more

Our final stop in Thailand was to stay with friends, Hugh and Sue, in Sue’s local village. Daniel met Hugh whilst playing cricket in Yorkshire and through their mutual love of the game, beer, and anything else cricket they have remained good friends. Due to Sue’s dislike of the English winter, they spend a few weeks of the winter months in Thailand which luckily coincided with our travels. After spending all our time in very touristy areas, we hoped to experience the ‘real’ Thailand during our stay. Sue’s village is well off the tourist trail and the sight of a ‘farang’ (foreigner) generated a few stares and conversation. Unfortunately the only part of the conversation we understood was ‘farang’ which was used quite frequently but always followed with greetings in Thai or English. We spent our ... read more

Ive been renamed Na Paa Sung which roughly translated means sky scraper! Working in the school has been great so far, but very knackering. Thai kids are very loud and sound like chipmunks when excited! I am in the 1-5 year olds class so was mostly running around trying to keep them entertained. The morning starts with an exercise class, then free time to play games. Around 11:30 they wash their hands ready for lunch. Today it was chicken blood soup. I didnt realise that we had to eat the same food as the children till it was too late :0( From then on i had an emergency snickers bar with me at all times. After lunch we supervise them clean their teeth, then they have a nap for about an hour. As they sleep we ... read more

In Surin, Eastern Thailand, about to start working in a school. We are literally the only Westerners for miles and its like the circus has come to town. Children stare and point and old women want to touch my "milky"skin, and i thought i was getting a tan! Can now make a mean Thai green curry and chicken phad thai. The fish oil mixed with curry paste is a bit hard to bare whilst cooking but if your eyes stop streming its actually a pleasant taste! Experienced my first Thai train journey. We were in 1st class which means you get one ceiling fan and a good chance of an unbroken seat. Some of our fellow passengers were in serious need of a trip the dentist! No buffet car over here. We stopped at a temple ... read more

Surin - Town of Whisky-drinking Elephant Riders Today I said goodbye to Bangkok and embarked on a journey to a little town in the Northeast of Thailand called Surin. The project organiser, Steve, had booked me and a fellow volunteer, Jessie, a train ride in the second class compartment. Now my friend from Bangkok had told me little horror stories about second class train compartments - smelly, squashed, don't trust the food, so I was a bit wary of it all. But on lighting the train, there was no nasty smells, and whilst we had to push through to get to our seats, once we were sat down and the other passengers had settled down, there was plenty of space. So the 7-hour train journey began. It was all going smoothly and Jessie and I were ... read more

This the day of the elephant round up. This morning, a large crowd is gathering to the stadium. There were a lot of explanation that I could follow thanks to a system of simultaneous translation.
