arrrgghhh...
They dried these out - little stinkers! Arriving back in Thailand provoked mixed feelings, mainly because we were leaving the beautiful and chilled Laos for the more developed Thailand. We stayed a night in Ubon Ratchathani as a stop off point before we headed South and where we had to catch the train to Bangkok. We tried to get a train as soon as we arrived but all the sleeping carriages were full and after spending all day travelling we didn’t fancy a night of no sleep so we opted for a night in a pretty shit guesthouse. The room was full of mozzies and as we were putting the mozzie net up the bed slightly collapsed on me but we managed to fix it. We got settled under the net we had bought some treats after not having any for a month – some dairy milk chocolate it was divine. However half way through our delights the bed properly collapsed and Dim fell straight through – it was so funny!!! So then we had to put the bed together again and while I was passing him the planks I whacked him around the head on accident; there was an instant lump on his head, it was horrible
for Dim but I couldn’t contain myself – a true Laurel and Hardy moment. Luckily there were 2 beds so we changed and had a reasonable night sleep.
We explored the limited sights of Ubon and went to an internet café, department store, big tesco (for supplies for the train) and then to KFC – just like being in England. Then it was to the train station on another Sawkenthaw (not the correct spelling – a public truck where people sit in the back) we were like celebrities taken these in Ubon, as there are not as many tourists and the locals were trying to help us get off at the right place etc.. really friendly people here. There was a monk who was getting off and needed his things passing to him that were on the back with us (he had been sat up front with the driver) I got up to pass him his stuff, whilst Dim just sat there totally oblivious. All the women started shouting no, no then I realized why; monks aren’t allowed to touch women and that includes there things – Dim finally clicked that he was the only man and so he
Jam sarnys!
We had to wait about 8 hours for the bus to Thailand, so we got a picnic. got up to help the monks!! It was one of them culturally sensitive moments but all the people on the bus and the monk were laughing!!
Then it was ALL ABOARD THE NIGHT TRAIN to Bangkok …….
The train journey was ok except we got very little sleep as it was the noisiest train we have ever been on, but it got us there in one piece and it was nice to see the sunrise over Bangkok. We were meant to be going straight to Koh Tao a small island on the South East Thailand coast but the weather reports were saying rain for the next few days so we decided to make our way down slowly stopping at other places along the way. The first stop was Hua Hin; This was a very expensive place to stay and in our opinion not very nice. It is apparently the place the Thai royal family holiday but it was so built up and not really that pretty. We stayed only one night and ended up getting leathered on beer Chang (strong Thai beer). We ate at the night market and made the best of the situation and although expensive
Erecting the net!
In the shitty room, just before the Laurel & Hardy moment for budget travels we managed to find a reasonably priced hotel that was lovely.
The day after we got the train to Prachup Kiri Kahn, this was a more laid back Thai seaside town and we had a nice time here. We stayed in a guesthouse like you see in a typical English seaside town for the first night and the owner was lovely. In the morning we had a great breakfast but sadly someone had booked our room so we had to move out. This was probably a blessing as we found a room in Maggies home stay guesthouse; again another lovely owner who ran her guesthouse as a kind of home away from home place. We could cook our own food and sit and watch TV and talk with other travelers it was lovely, we didn’t really want to leave but the beaches weren’t great here and we needed some much needed beach bumming.
