Day 8. Woke up to a beautiful day, had breakfast and set off down the western side of the island where most of the action is. The Eastern side is less developed so not as many shops for the ladies, very important. We decided to drive to the other end of the island and work our way back, about a 45 min drive. At the furthest point lies Ban Bangbao Jetty, a concrete jetty reaching out into the bay with improvised shops on either side, built over the water on stilts. At the very end of the jetty is a lighthouse and moorings for the pleasure boats that abound.
We had a leisurely lunch on the jetty of squid. battered and grilled, extra large king prawn, 6 to a half kilo, and some veggy stuff full of chillies and of course a couple of beers. All very nice and only £40 for the 6 of us. Heading back to the villa we called in at Tesco Lotus for supplies.
It may be of interest to mention the driving on the island roads. They are winding and very steep with hairpin bends occuring between villages, and although usually 2 lanes,
Panorama
panoramic view of the villa and surroundings making progress is quite slow due to an abundance of motor bikes in various forms, tourists and the locals meandering off the pavements (if present) and of course the street dogs. You just have to take your time. It's also worth noting that on the hairpins, the clutch in the trusty old Hertz rental van was slipping, which didn't inspire confidence.
Returning to the villa we plunged into the pool for the first time to cool off. Very nice. I then went in the sea; it's the temperature of a warm bath but the problem is after walking seaward 50 meters it's still only thigh deep. Tomorrow I'll explore further down the beach for water.
