I had always heard that Bangkok was humid and stinky and smoggy, so my expectations weren't high. But my expectations were exceeded as the city did not smell all that bad- better than Mexico anyways and the smog was not that bad either. The city reminded me of a more cultural version of New York City.
Arriving in Bangkok at midnight on Sunday we expected the city to be quiet. We were in for a huge surprise when we could barely move down Khaosan Road to find our hotel. We were shoulder to shoulder with people partying and shopping and eating street food. Luckily it only took us ten minutes to find our hotel. They had lost our reservation but had a room for us. Our room was nice. We were determined to try and beat jet lag so we went to bed right away to try and get on the Thai schedule.
The next morning we woke up bright and early and ready to explore. We walked around and tried to find the Grand Palace. Some scammers were trying to convince us that it was closed and they would take us somewhere else but I had read lots
of other info ahead of time and knew of this scam. We found the Grand Palace on our own and it was anything but closed. It was packed. We rented pants and a long skirt as it is considered rude to be on holy ground with knees or shoulders showing. The Grand Palace was beautiful and the grounds were huge. We walked around for several hours taking it all in. It was quite pricy almost fifteen Canadian dollars each but it was well worth it.
The heat was stifling. We decided to head to the MBK Shopping Centre and check out the seven floors of shopping they had there. It was huge and it seemed as if there were thousand of shops. After shopping all seven floors I was exhausted. Not sure if it was the jet lag or the seven floors of shopping but I was in need of a nap. We headed back to the hotel and took a 3 hour nap.
For dinner we went to an Irish Pub that was next to our hotel. It looked like an Irish Pub but the menu was all Thai food. My dinner was great. Tyler's however was
crazy spicy. We had ordered his dish not spicy and after trying Tyler's dinner I was sweating bullets. Luckily I had so much food on my plate that we shared mine.
After dinner we decided to go for a drink. Which turned into several drinks including my first bucket of Sangsom (rum, coke and red bull I think). It was a night of firsts. I also used my first squat toilet. Luckily a friendly Aussie trained me on how to use one as I was very confused. We met a friendly guy from Austria and had a few drinks with him and learned a lot about both Europe and Thailand (it was his fifth time).
Right now we are about to board a plane to Phuket! Excited to be by the beach!
Until next time
