Arriving in Bangkok
Straight to Khao San Road... Day 60 Having woke up feeling a little worse for wear, and with Mark now sporting a fat lip from the door incident we packed up and caught our bus for Bangkok. It was a 9 hour journey in total in quite a small mini bus but we crossed the border without any problems and arrived at Khoa San Road in Bangkok around 9pm.
I hadn't been to this area before, but Mark said it had expanded quite a bit since his last visit, with the neighbouring roads now also full of busy restaurants, bars and clubs. After grabbing our first Thai curry we sat at one of the busy roadside bars, watched the antics and did a bit of lady-boy spotting! After another bucket we headed to bed, looking forward to seeing some more of Bangkok tomorrow.
Day 61 Mark got bitten to death by bed bugs in the night so after breakfast and a quick stroll down Khoa San Road in the daylight hours, we headed to a new hostel on Silom Road, that had been recommended to us by a couple we met in Cambodia. The tuk-tuk ride was not like the tranquil drives
Very strong cocktails
...and straight on the buckets! in Cambodia, but a hairy experience with our driver, who called himself Schumacher, cutting up lorries, screeching round corners on two wheels and speeding through traffic lights!
The Silom Art Hostel where we booked into was smart and really quirky, with artistic touches all over and after exploring there we headed out into the city. Because we had both been to Bangkok before and done the main tourist attractions, we decided to take it fairly easy. We had some lunch and explored the Silom area, including an Indian temple which seemed quite lively with music blarring out!
After that, we had our first thai massage of the trip (with no extras) and then headed to a the very fancy Lebua Hotel on the 68th floor of the State Tower for a posh cocktail! The bar, which featured in Hangover 2, was very expensive (two mojitos cost more than our accomodation!) so we sipped our drinks and made the most of the fantastic view over the city, before heading off. We did both agree though that we had been thoroughly spoilt by the skyline in Hong Kong, and Bangkok was not as impressive.
Having had enough sophistication, we
lowered our standards considerably and headed by taxi to Patpong. Again, Mark had been here before so knew what to expect. Despite some very persistant sales pitches, we decided not to see a 'ping pong' show but sat outside one of the safer looking bars and watched the madness. The area was quite seedy with lots of lady-boys and scantily dressed girls with older men, and many just performing in bars and prancing around. We decided to skip the clubs, all with subtle names such as "Super Pussy", and decided to head back to normality after a couple of beers!
Day 62 Having pretty much covering the area near Silom Road we took a proper taxi this time to Sukhumvit where we relocated for our final night. We checked into The Mix, a nice hostel right next to the Skytrain and then headed out for lunch at a restaurant, which had been recommended to us, called Cabbages and Condoms! The whole place (which was non-profit and supported sexual health) was condom themed with even the lampshades made of them! Sticking with the unintended theme of the day, after lunch we headed to a penis shrine where people bring
willies of all shapes and sizes to supposedly boost their fertility!
After, we had a stroll around some shopping malls, looking for a new camera for Suz after hers had broken on the last day in Siem Reap. We failed at this but before heading back we went to the roof of a nearby hotel and Mark, had a sneaky dip in their rooftop infinity pool with a nice view of the city below as the sun was setting.
In the evening we went to Sian Shopping Mall and had an immense all-you-can-eat sushi buffet at Oishi Grand (thanks for the recommendation Leen & Brego!) We definitely made the most of it and had far too much sushi as well as barbecue meats and fish followed by about 5 different desserts! It was delicious!
On the way back to the hotel, although we were fit to burst there was some kind of beer market, which seemed quite lively and had a band playing so we stopped for a Chang before rolling into bed!
Day 63 This morning we headed to MBK Shopping Mall and this time successfully found a new camera for Suz, to
celebrate we treated ourselves to another thai massage. Mark said he felt like the woman had beaten him up but Suz's was a little gentler!
Sorry to be saying goodbye to Asia, at around 4pm we got in a taxi to the airport to begin our 30 hour mammoth journey to Buenos Aires!
We´ve had an amazing time in Asia and seen so much, it feels like an age ago that we landed in Beijing! But we can´t wait for the next installment of our adventure.
