At 10.20am we heard a knock at the door. There was Pete looking all fresh faced and wide awake - we could have done with an extra few hours but got up to join him for breakfast. Pete had been looking forward to his breakfast of fruit and yogurt which he remembered from his last trip, but as his breakfast was placed in front of him last nights late night caught up with him and he couldn't face eating a thing. After a long walk through shopping areas selling everything from jumpers to guns Pete felt the overwhelming urge for a nap. Was this last nights late night or was this the jet lag kicking in?
In the evening we caught a taxi to the city and met a friend of Pete’s at the red sky rooftop bar. The cocktails were great but the view from the bar on the 55th floor was simply amazing. We were lucky to have come on a clear night so in every direction you could see for miles.
We followed this with a beer in the not so impressive London brew - not that there was anything wrong with it but the red
sky bar was a tough act to follow.
We followed this with another bar but we didn’t stay long. The band for the evening were playing mostly current hits, but the only issue was each song sounded like it was done in the style of an Oom-pah band. Also the place was full of old men with suspiciously young looking Thai girlfriends.
Back at the hotel I planned to have one last drink with Pete before bed. Things didn't go to plan as we got talking to a local drunk who offered to take Pete to see his rather basic lodgings across the road from our hotel. Pete said it was one room with a pile of clothes and a duvet in the corner. He didn’t have much but he was a happy man - I don’t think this was all due to the bottle of Jonny Walker his friend had given him. As we looked at the clock on the way to our rooms we were surprised to find it was 5.20am. Pete was supposed to be getting on to Thai time not putting us on UK time!
Not surprisingly after our late night we slept
till late in the day. Our body clocks were getting confused and having breakfast at 2pm didn’t help this. We had a lot to organise. We were leaving some things in our locker at the hotel so we could lighten our load for our trip through Vietnam. Now we just had to decide what to leave. The remainder which somehow was spread across the entire room had to squeeze into our bags. With our tired brains not functioning this was a tough task. When we finally finished it was dinner time.
While we sat waiting for our food we tried calling to book our hotel in Hanoi but the phone was engaged for hours. We emailed them and hoped we would hear back in time. After a spot of shopping down Khao san road it was time to head back and get an early night as we would have to get up at 3am for our flight. The hotel finally emailed back but they only had 2 double rooms not one single and one double. I emailed to say we would take two doubles and transfer from the airport, now we just hoped they would get back to us
before we got on the plane.
