Friday 1/29/10
Before heading across the seas James and I spend the night in San Francisco with Anissa and Nat. On Friday we went to SFMOMA and took in some Art, that's right with a capital "A". That night we went to Hard Knox for the friend chicken and waffle dinner of our life- a very authentic American send off.
At the airport we met up with Matt for some very large beers and a chat and then got on our 12:05 plane for Bangkok. After a 14 hour flight we had a three hour layover in Taipai then another 4 hours to Thailand, we selected the eggs option for breakfast foregoing the noodles and Kim Che.

We arrived in Bangkok dead tired and having lost an entire day- on the way back we will arrive on the same day we left so I guess that is where we recoup our loss. So, day 1 we walked around our hood, got haseled by tuk tuk drivers and drank in the smells and overwhelming heat of the city. Later we went swimming at our hotel and hit up happy hour- the 11th floor hotel pool was a real oasis
from the hectic bustling city of 10 million people below. In order to reset our body clocks we tried to stay awake until a reasonable bed time- we made it to 8 pm.

On Monday we woke up at 6 am and had breakfast at our hotel and set out for the city. We took a water taxi down the canal and toured The Grand Palace. It was truly amazing- we will add some photos when we have a chance as words cannot descibe it. Around noon we both started to get cranky so we went for lunch and beer on the pier. After we were in a better mood (yeah food and beer) we went to see the Reclining Buddha. The Thai word for temple is Wat. After the reclining Buddha and the large compound surrounding it we hopped in a taxi and made our way to The Golden Mount, Wat Saket, so we climbed a hill and had an amazing view of the city. The relics of Buddha are buried at the this particular spot. After our day of Wats we were again/still exhausted so had a swim, ordered room service and watched TV.

On Tuesday we decided to make it more of an us day, we went to the mall and I got a mani pedi ($12) and then we sent some postcards. Then we went to the Jim Thompson house then back to the mall to see Avatar. We arrived late for the movie and it was a VIP screening. We arrived late so we missed out on the blankets being handed out but we did get welcome drinks, the seats were assigned and before the movie the National Anthem was played and everyone stood up until it was over. After the movie we actually accepted a tuk tuk ride and went to the night market- which was pretty much like the flea market with EXTREMELY aggressive sales people. After we escaped that we found a sidewalk restaurant and I had green curry and James had red and some beers. Pleasantly full we returned to the hotel and managed to stay up almost until 11 pm.

Today we flew to Chiang Mai, Mike is supposed to join us but his flight from Prague to Moscow was canceled so last I heard he was in Istanbul- where apparently the coffee costs
$150 (I can only assume he was PO'd and embellishing a bit). More to come on Chiang Mai as we just arrived and only have a few minutes and not a very good connection to download our photos and videos.
