So, leaving Malaysia behind us we flew north to Bangkok - the last stop before home!
We got the bus out of the airport and eventually got to our stop near the hotel. As we started walking with all our bags the hotel wasn't as close to the stop as we had first envisioned. Eventually we saw a hotel that looked like our one so went in to find out it was the sister hotel! Never fear though, they phoned up our hotel and sent the concierge round on his tuk-tuk to collect us, which was perfect timing as it started to hammer it down as we pulled off!
Arriving at our hotel we were greeted with ice tea, cold flannels for the face and a traditional thai flower braclet - the 5 star treatment was starting here! We were shown to our suite which was absolutely amazing. It had an entrance corridor with huge wardrobes, a massive bedroom with kingsize bed and 42 inch flat screen tv, a living room with another tv, sofas, desk, arrmchair and then a small kitchen unit as well. The crown in the jewel was the bathroom which came with its own massive
jacuzzi in the corner - ah yeah!
After all the pleasantries it was out to do some shopping! We had been recommended a tailor for getting some suits put together so it was off there first. After some good bartering i was signed up for 2 suits and 2 shirts with a few ties thrown in for good measure. Leaving the suits to be made we headed home via the shopping mall back to our jacuzzi for some R&R! That evening we left the room only for essentials such as dinner which came in the form of a tastey italian restaurant round the corner.
The following morning we ordered our room service big breakfast and then deliberated over which spa package to go for. Eventually deciding on one that was booked up for the early afternoon. I was a bit dubious of the spa treatment at first as they had us strip down and wear these tiny semi transparent surgical pant things but once I got past that it was very nice. It started with a salt exfoliation rub down and then a revitilising jacuzzi bath followed by 90 mins of massage - sweeeeeeeeeeeet! Feeling thoroughly refreshed we
were whisked back over to the suit place for a fitting and then made our way over to Pat Pong. We arrived just as they were setting up the night market and so saw a huge array of fake watches, shoes, t-shirts - you name it bangkoks got a fake version of it! Deciding there was only about 18 hours of our hotel suite left we decided to head back there and get some more room service on the case!
The last day of our trip was left to sight seeing, so saying goodbye to our 5 star suite we headed out into Bangkok to see the sights. After finally buying ourselves a boat ticket we headed off and first top was the Grand Palace. This is a collection of royal buildings that are all extremely decorative, covered in gold leaf and colourful mosaics. Here we also saw the Temple of the Emerald Buddha which is actually made of Jade and alot smaller than i first thought! Leaving here we headed down the river and stopped at 'Wat Arun'. This is the Temple of the Dawn and it is possible to walk up some very steep stairs about half
way to the top - you can't go all the way as some unfortunate tourist fell off a few years ago! We realised how easy it would be tp fall off as well as safety isn't exactly a priority here! Finally we headed to Wat Pho which is the worlds largest reclining buddha. It was quite impressive and the feet were especially nice with pearl inlays in them displaying many versions of buddha. Leaving Buddhas and Wats behind we headed over to Khao San Road for a typical touristy Bangkok experience. Here the streets are lined with markets and again you can get anything you want (all fake of course!) in the world. In amongst the trainers, movies, t-shirts and food we saw some id guys selling degrees, isic cards and driving licenses all very very good fakes! There really isn't anything that you can't buy in Bangkok! Before we knew it, it was time to head back to the hotel for 1 last spa special! We had booked up another 2 hours of pampering for the last treat in Bangkok. This started with a lemon grass rub down and then involved a traditional thai massage and foot relexology treatment.
The massage was amazing and a firm favourite of Pauline. They were pulling arms up, walking on our backs getting us in headlocks and all sorts but it felt fantastic!
That was it for us and our travels as we headed out to the airport feeling thoroughly relaxed after a good 3 days in Bangkok. Unfortunately we had an unexpected suprise for us at the airport in the form of a 3 1/2 hour delay so we didn't actually get on the plane till 4.15 am! We finally touched down at 10.00am on Thursday 14th August where we were greeted by happy parents with teary eyes!
So all in all a fantastic 10 1/2 months which will be remembered for a very long time to come. We have been dirty gringo's through South America, down every road in New Zealand, swam with the biggest fish in the world in Australia, got sweaty in Borneo and got thoroughly pampered in Bangkok.
One more thing... its been emotional.
