After Darrens illness we decided that we needed to catch up with what Chaing Mai had to offer, and so planned an action packed day for Sunday. It started with an hour long elephant show, where elephants, who looked surprisingly healthy and well looked after, painted pictures, had a bit of a boogie, did hand stands and anything amusing that would find funny seeing an elephant do. They taught Alex how to kick a ball and Darren to dance. The painting was no Picasso, and took a mind numbing half an hour to complete!
Next on the agenda was an elephant ride. After the intial shock of being 15ft in the air on top of a hairy beast, we soon took it in our stride. The 'driver' we had was the best of the lot, the only one who didnt have a spiked stick to use as a steering wheel. He marched us to the front and led the way, which kept us away from everyone else. After marching through the Mae Ping river, we went up a trail into the jungles of Chiang Mai.
The bamboo rafting came next, and we passed what was apparently the set
for the new Rambo movie! We got wet, and after seeing what the elephants did in the river, we werent too pleased. We rode Ox next. They had big horns. It wasnt really that exhilarating.
After lunch we hopped back on the bus to go see the most depressing monkey centre there is. Each monkey was chained up to a tree, they all looked a bit rabid, apart from a little cute one who was constantly sucking on its thingy. The monkeys were then forced to perform for us, riding bikes, lifting weights etc... We dont know what we were expecting but it certainly wasn't what we thought. The last stop was the Orchid farm. There were lots of flowers.
Yesterday we left Chiang Mai to fly back to Bangkok, again loyal Meng was on hand at 6 in the morning to drive us to the airport. When we got to Bangkok, we were a lot more wise to the alterior motives of most people! We didnt do much, but we went to see the IMMENSE reclining gold Buddah at Wat Pho (see photo). On the way back, we had a drugged up tuk tuk driver, who was
a little bit crazy and believed the way around the traffic was to drive on the other side of the road. However he provided 15mins of quality entertainment! Last night we returned to the backpackers central Kao San Rd, and sat listening to an acoustic set in a rooftop bar. Twas a good night.
Leaving for the airport now, Darrens starting to feel hungover. Alex is annoyed cos he's doing all the typing. Darren cant type quick. Excuses.
Signing off from Thailand, India here we come!
