Me and Fionn arrived in Bangkok at around 8-30 pm only half an hour late! We found accomodation not far from the Boots near Khao San. It was absolute madness everybody had water guns and were spraying us on the way to the guesthouse. After dropping off my bag and having a shower we went out for some dinner. We got some street food then had some beers. Everybody kept getting us with water, and not just any water ice cold water! Fionn met up with his friend Marit and we all went for a drink. I headed back to the guesthouse wet through, leaving Fionn and Marit still out.
The next day I got up and discovered that Fionn had aquired a super soaker water gun last night. He went out to soak the town. I then went to find him, but there were so many people that we just walked around the area buying bottles of water and little bowls of flour. As part of the Songkran festival, Thai New Year, you put a flour and water based mix onto the faces of people as you pass them in the street. All the Thai people had their
faces covered and before long so did we. We started to return the favour as well! We bumped into Fionn near the Khao San Road when he sprayed us with his water gun. He had hurt his back the other night so we all went back to the guesthouse to dry off and calm down for a bit. Fionn was concerned about his back so went off to see a doctor. We took his gun and went on the hunt. We came across Thais who had big barrels filled up with water and huge chunks of ice and also had hose pipes! Needless to say our gun wasn't a match! We continued to run through the streets, getting soaked. It was one of the funniest days of the whole trip! That night we tried not to get wet and went for some food. We had to avoid the tourist areas as so we didn't get drenched, but we did, they still got us!
Early next morning Fionn left for Myanmar (Burma) at 4-30am! I spent the day getting wet through again and covered in flour! One of the Thai girls got me bad with a bucket of ice water
so I ran up to her and picked up the biggest chunck of ice out of her water barrel and put it on her head and neck, he he, Songkran is great fun. Today I went down the Khao San Road too, you had to queue to get in. It was so busy. They had a foam making machine and competitions where you had to hit targets with your water gun on peoples head to win prizes. I had some dinner near Soi Rambuttri then grabbed my bags and went to the main road to find a cab to the airport, it was around 9-30pm. There were loads of people still in the streets and they all put flour on my face as I pushed through the crowds with my backpack. I found a cab that people where trying to get to Patpong, but when he heard I wanted to go to the airport he told them to go away as he wanted my fare! I arrived at the airport wet through and smothered in flour. I saw all the people looking at me as I walked through the terminal building. I headed for the toilet and got changed into
Covered in flour
No my hairs not going grey yet! some dry clothes and washed my face. On the way in, one of the toilet cleaning ladies saw me and laughed saying 'Khao San' then when see saw me come out clean, she laughed again at the transformation! I got to the check in desk to be told that my flight was delayed 4 hours and wouldn't be going until 4-30am. Also my flight was overbooked and I had been put on standby! They were offering $400 to take the flight the next day and put you up in the aiport hotel. I would have taken it, but I needed to clear imigration that day before my visa ran our. I told them that I needed to get through immigartion now as it was fast approaching midnight, or could they give me a day extension and I would take the flight the next day, along with the cash. For whatever reasons they said I couldn't get an extension and took me off stand by and guaranteed my place on the plane. I ran through immigration with 3 minutes to spare! I then had to wait around in the airport for 4 and half hours, though I did get a free
meal voucher. Well I'd been up to see Fionn leave at 4-30 that morning and was still up at 4-30 the next day to board the plane. I didn't even sleep that much on the flight home because the turbulance was so bad, either that or the pilot was drunk!
That was it, the end of my world trip.... it had all gone so fast.
