The view over Bangkok
View from the top while the sun set Hi!
This is my first entry on my overseas adventure. We left Canberra on Wednesday 29th June and arrived in Bangkok late that night. Amy Pietsch, Wendy and I flew cattle class but had fun doing it. We drank champagne and watched movies (some of us stupidly wached romantic love movies, should have stuck to the comedy I think). None of us slept very well. Luckily Evita made it on our flight, we didn't know if she would until 20 minutes before we boarded, but she flew in true style - with a slepper bed in Business class, we were green with envy!
We arrived in Bangkok and started the trip in style, Alan (Dana and Wendy's dad) picked us up at the airport and Marion (their mum) had put an esky of champagne in the car for the trip home, a fantastic start to the holiday. We went home and Yupin (their domestic staff) had cooked fresh spring rolls and dim sims, so we sat on the balcony sipping champagne and muching on yummy thai snacks.
We've been refering to ourselves as 'Team Thailand', very daggy I know, but we're having fun with it. The team includes
Cocktails over-looking Bangkok
At the top of a 61 storey building sipping cocktails while the sun set. Day 1 in Bangkok
We went to MBK (a huge shopping mall/markets). I ordered a few suits for work ($100 for a made to fit suit - can't go wrong with that!). We pottered around the shops then headed home a for a swim in the apartment pool. I went out that afternoon to get my hair washed and blow dryed and manicure/pedicure. I was in the mood to be pampered and Thailand is just the place for it. That night we went to a local Thai restaurant (very local, stools outside on the street, fantastic food). We were meant to party that night but the plans fell through. So we wandered up Sukumvit Road to a few bars, first stop Crazy Charlies - and it deserved it's name! It was an outdoor bar on the road with some bar stools, the bar was covered in crazy nick nacks and had signs like 'Please move the stools towards the bar when cars drive out of drive way',
Shopping in Thailand
A selection of my purchases (mainly jewellery!) after a day of shopping at the markets. as this indicates it was a small bar right on the road, very popular with the foreigners. Next stop was Soi Nana, we went into the girlie district. We stopped a bar and watched the world go by, in particular we saw lots of sleazy old men with thai girls go by, had a great time pocking fun and laughing.
Day 2 in Bangkok
Another day of shopping! Lots of walking but got some good bargains - dvd's, pj's, handbags. That night we went to the Banyan Tree, one of the tallest buildings in Bangkok and the tallest outdoor restaurant in the world. It was on the 61st floor and completely open roof (so we had to go when it wasn't raining, not that it has yet). We had a great time sipping cocktails, looking out over Bangkok and watching the sunset. We took photos that I'll upload. I decided that I was experiencing a life style I could easily become accustomed to (with a few extra $000 at the end of my pay check!). After the cocktails we went to Big Mama's for dinner. A great Italian restuarant that does 'fusion food' a mix of Italian and Thai - I was in some sort of paradise! So we had Tom Yum Pizza, green curry pasta and Laksa pizza. Great fun. Then we went to the Alan and Marion's local pub 'Black Swan'. It was their first birthday that night, and Alan and Marion are locals, so the first round of drinks were on the house.
Day 3 in Bangkok
Another big day of shopping! This time at the Chutachuck markets, a huge market that sells almost everything, and at bargain prices. We shopped for 2 hours then most the group went home, I like to refer to this group as the 'soft group' because the harcore shoppers, ME all on my lonesome, kicked on for another 2 hours of hard shopping. And believe me it was hard. The markets get extremely crowded and hot, the aisles are very narrow and the ability to get lost is not hard. I got to the point where I was feeling like I would faint, despite knocking pack numerous bottles of water, so I took to going into shoe stalls that weren't very busy and with fans so I could sit down. I'd try on shoes (naturally this wasn't far from my natural instinct anyway) and try to catch my breath. I spent heaps but got heaps of bargains too! I was buggered by the time I got home so a snooze by the pool was well deserved. We've spent this afternoon lounging on the couch sipping champagne. Tonight we're heading to a local Thai restuarant (I don't think I'll ever get sick of Thai food!) and then will have an early night. We're flying to Koh Samui at 6am tomorrow, that means getting up at 4am, dear lord, I don't know how I'm going to manage. First stop in Koh Samui - a foot massage - so much shopping is taking it's toll!
