My time in Taiwan is drawing to a close, so it makes sense to have a bit of a summary of my experiences and thoughts on this vibrant and interesting country. I've been here for a year now, and have hugely enjoyed myself. It's changed my perception of traveling, and also the way I do things when I'm traveling. I haven't done all of things I wanted to do when I first arrived here, but faeces occurs, or something like that... The highlights have undoubtedly been Tainan, hiking in numerous locations, and nights out in Taipei. Tainan is a gorgeous city in the South of the island, and used to be the capital city before Taipei. To talk about reasons for my decision to go travelling, it's important to have a bit of background on my lifestyle in the UK, as well as motivations for leaving. I wanted to escape the trap of buying a house, getting married, and settling into a job I wasn't passionate about. I'd also squandered my free education on a degree that I wasn't passionate about, because there seemed to be few other options when I finished school. I'd coasted through school, not caring about grades, or trying earn lots of money later on in life. I spent my degree doing exactly the same thing. A year of teaching in Taiwan has begun! I've now been living in Taiwan for 2 months, and I'm enjoying it. I live in the North of the country, near Taipei City. It's very modern, busy, and somehow still has plenty of nature, which is nice for people like me; I need a walk in a non-inhabited space once or twice a month to stay sane. Working here seems to be fraught with few complications, provided your school (I'm an English teacher) is on the ball with the visa applications, and other such things. During my exploration so far (which has been limited by money, but fun nonetheless) I've been hiking, rambling, shopping, clubbing, and getting to know the fabulous array of restaurants that are all a stones throw from where I live.
