Thanks for the title must go to the band who serenaded us on our 2nd night in Srilanka with such a beautiful complex song consisting only of those words! Anyway... Sorry it has been so long but I have been very busy enjoying this beautiful isle for two weeks now and loving it. The people here have won over my heart - so different from India. The locals are brilliant with us and treat hauling our massive bags around as a great game and ask us what we have in there! So, here is the catch up: Wew headed straight up to Kandy on our arrival on the train, where we had to sit on the floor in third class as there were no tickets for anything else, although halfway through a man offered us the ... read more

Elephant Polo. The annual Galle Elephant Polo Tournament consisted of six international teams from Hong Kong, Singapore, Scotland, England, Sri Lanka and Thailand, although all the players bar two were Poms. Each team has 3 elephants. A mahout steers the elephant, while the player sits behind and “trys” to hit the ball with an extra large polo mallet. It’s the slowest game in the world and hilarious watching the elephants perform for the crowd while the players desperately encourage the elephant to move towards the ball. Occasionally a player would stretch a little too far and actually fall off the elephant. Needless to say the 3 day tournament was entertaining. Independence Day. Independence Day saw Galle Cricket Stadium packed with people and national flags. There were marching teams, brass bands, bagpipes, and traditional dancers. The gun ... read more

Kandy is another must visit city and a great place to base yourself to see the interior of Sri Lanka - Pinnawalla being a good example. Not to miss the cultural shows put on daily and the Budhist temple is another must see. The lake in Kandy is interesting, all very British with the stone walling in the design of the Union flag around the lake perimeter. Many tea plantations to visit also. If you want to spoil yourself stay at The Mahaweli Reach Hotel -www.mahaweli. com such a nice hotel ... read more

Dear friends, After such great intentions, sadly communication let me down (as Tony Hadley sang). I've actually finished my four weeks of volunteering now, and you've not heard a peep out of me, very sorry, but there are mitigating circumstances! I've been living in a small village on the West coast. The nearest internet cafe was a 30min bus ride away, where it was nearly $4 per hour for a dial-up connection. I managed to get there maybe once or twice a week, but couldn't afford to spend that precious time blogging. Right now I'm in Kandy, in the centre of the island, where things are a little more civilised, they even have broadband! However, I now have four weeks worth of highs and lows, joys and sorrows to write up, far too much to get ... read more

Oh well...you know...after a few months travelling - one needs a holiday. Cue the South Coast of Sri Lanka (Tangalle & Unawatuna). Picture perfect beaches, turtle watching & setting free, rooms 10 steps from the water, watching Arsenal play live on Sat at 9pm with the sand in our toes (1-1 Bolton - close shave - but at least Chelsea lost). Not much more to say really.... S&L x PS: Actually - there is a little bit. This was the area hit by the Tsunami. We heard some harrowing tales from people who were actually there, and who had lost loved ones and friends. It's difficult to tell how things really are - in most areas there seems to be a lot of new building and 'sponsored' projects, but we were also told that things are ... read more

Well its been and interesting three weeks, but now tis time to move on... But before we do that, we'd better update you on wot we've been up to for the last week, as we have been so busy and too knackered to write!!! It turns out that this tour round Sri Lanka was a lot more physically challenging than we'd first anticipated. Steve was fine of course, dont know where he gets the energy, but Rozi was flagging a little climbing hills in 30 degree heat, having had virtually no sleep the night before thanks to geckos. So glad we dont have them at home. They look cute, but believe me they are noisy!!! We did a 2 day hike up in the highlands in the middle of the island around a national park and ... read more

"What do you do if you are on a train and the Tsunami comes?" We were stood in the open doorway of the slow-moving express train from Matara to Colombo, the hot breeze wafting our faces and the baking sun lowering beneath the palms. Out, beyond the blasted skeletons of once solid brick houses, beyond the temporary camps of tents and the gleaming white of the newly erected stupas and gravestones, was the sea, no more than 200m away. The questioner was one of three young Sri-Lankans from Kandy, sited in the cool of the central highlands, returning after spending time helping to rebuild the wrecked homes that stretch at least 250km along the southern coasts. I looked around me, paused, and made the sign of the cross. "Nothing. There is nothing you can do." The ... read more

Tha last few days have been very busy and we have seen a hole new side of Sri lanka - mostly hills! We took a delightful road trip to Ella over two days with ourgorgeous surrogate grandparents Mark and Michelle. With a greatdriver who made stops for us to try local specialities - buffalo curd with kittul treacle is a must if youare ever in the Yala park area! We stopped in Tissa for the night in a friendly guesthouse with a blind owner, who despite his lack of sight took Sophia on tour of the fabulous garden pointing out every plant, mango, tamarind, aloe vera, franipani...and the two pet tortoises In the evening we took a trip to Kataragama one of the most holy places in Sri Lanka, with a prk that host temples to ... read more

So our next adventure was a safari in Yala National Park on the South East Coast. We stayed in a lovely little hotel called Vikum in Tissa and the owner arranged a full days safari, with a great guide and just the two of us. We had been warned that it was very difficult to spot the Top 3 animals: the Leopard, Elephant & Sloth Bear....but we were extremely luckily and saw all 3! the leopard bing the hardest to spot, lying high up in a tree (especially when you have shit binoculars!) plus lots of beautiful peacocks, crocs, mongoose, deer, bee-eater birds, monitor lizzards etc etc. On our way down to the beach front we managed to find a male elephant which decided to charge at us, but - and this is a top tip ... read more
