Tuesday 18 February, 2020, cont'd We had a quiet afternoon and went outside at 6.50 pm for our dinner. Pat had steamed rice and I had a fried rice with chicken in a local style. After, we got to try buffalo curd, a local delicacy, with pineapple honey. Lights out 9.40 pm. Wednesday 19 February, 2020. Visit to Yala National Park. Pick up from the rooms was 4.20 am, so alarms were set for 4.00 am. As always we were awake before the alarm! Indika said he would come to unlock the gate to the property, prepare a boxed breakfast and see us off safely. Our vehicle arrived on time. They use modified single cabs, which have six seats set in three pairs, tiered in a frame stuck up on the back. This gives additional height ... read more

HE SAID... Today we were travelling south-west from Batticaloa to Mahiyangana. We woke at 6am, organised our packs and then wandered around the outer perimeter of our hotel, which jutted out into the Batticaloa lagoon. We watched fishermen in wooden outriggers cast their nets and slowly draw in their catch, while other fishermen walked through the lagoon with smaller nets. We then headed to breakfast and enjoyed thosai (thin lacy crepes made of lightly-fermented black lentils and rice / called dosa in India), fish curry, sambar (a lentil based vegetable stew), pol sambol (shredded coconut with onions, chilli and lime), coconut chutney (a thick mixture of ground coconut, tamarind and chilli), toast, jam, juice and tea. The fish curry was excellent (especially with the thosai), and the sambar was fiery. The breakfast was impres... read more

HE SAID... Today we were travelling south-east from Kandy to Bandarawela. Despite the previous evening’s drinks, we woke early (6:30am) and headed up to breakfast in the hotel’s open air dining area. I decided against a Sri Lankan breakfast – not because I didn’t feel well, but we had a five and a half hour train trip ahead, and I was hoping not to patronise the train’s toilet too frequently. I opted for cornflakes, guava juice, tea, toast and boiled eggs. We checked out of the charming Senani Hotel mid-morning, clambered into the minibus and headed down into Kandy’s railway station. We picked up some vegetarian pan rolls (filled and rolled-up crepes that are crumbed and fried) and vegetable roti triangles (filled roti folded into a triangle and sealed) to snack on, and I also grabbed ... read more

From the plane I could see Mother Ganges winding through the landscape. On our arrival in Varanasi, we found a taxi to take us into the city. The closer we got the smaller the streets and more crowded until we could go no further, as the driver said it wasn't possible as no traffic allowed. We put our back packs on and began to walk through streets, shops selling everything from food to house hold goods, silk shops and vegetables stalls etc..... We walked down the narrow back streets with sewerage flowing down the gutters, cows and people jammed the tiny streets along with more food stalls. We followed the route with our google map to our hotel. We were over come by the stench of human waste and everyday life. "Our hotel" our refuge, down ... read more

In relation to previous expeditions, we had a long lie before the safari in Udawalawe, waking up at 5am. It was necessary to arrive at the national park for opening time to give us enough time to see as much wildlife as possible before they headed for shelter as the temperatures rose towards midday. This was especially the case for the elephants who move to the thicker bush when the heat becomes unbearable. Travelling in a jeep is compulsory during these safari's for obvious safety reasons. The Udawalawe national park boasts a wide range of wildlife which can compete with most East African parks, including elephants, leopards, buffalo, crocodiles, wild boar, deer and a range of lizards to name a few. Due to our elephant experience the night before we were desperate to see more. With ... read more

Damit ... read more

So today started much like all of the others have. Get up, get dressed, pack our bags, eat a buffet breakfast with too many croissants and meet our guide and van. Today we were heading to the southern part of Sri Lanka and doing some white water rafting on the say. It was supposed to be a 90 min ride to the white water rafting, but as with everything in the van it turned into 2.5 hours. And all 2.5 hours were on windy, hilly roads. The roads are meant to be 2 car, but only wide enough for 1.5 cars so the driver is forced to hit the brakes with EVERY vehicle we pass. And of course honk. We finally made it to the rafting guide and it starts raining. But what better to do ... read more

Good evening readers, Some I have said a fond farewell to India and I'm now in Sri Lanka. My flight was at 18.40 so I left the hotel at 1pm to make sure I got there on time, I didn't want a repeat of the great rock and roll Heathrow incident lol. Of course it was the usual crazy taxi ride to the airport and at one point I thought I would be joining the taxi driver in the front seat as he slowed down to go over a speed bump after racing up,to it, at the airport! This was after narrowly avoiding a random pedestrian taking his life in his hands trying to cross the raid on a busy and fast stretch of road near the airport. No seat belts in the back seat! I ... read more

Let's do something a bit different here. I would like to share a story having to do with communication in a different part of the world. This post consists of a particularly noteworthy conversational moment with a complete stranger. One needs much patience when traveling long term, especially in certain parts of the world, and for obvious reason. This circumstance, despite the heat, my ever-growing hunger and the frustration of the situation, in hindsight, was really quite a humorous moment. In fact, it is one of the more memorable conversations I have had, and here it is, verbatim, taken directly from my journal. As an aside, for anyone who has traveled to Sri Lanka before, you can no doubt visualize this *exact scenario. Ahh, the joys of communication. After my bus arrived at the station in ... read more
