I went on my first weekend trip this past weekend and had a great time! We started off driving up north to Hatares Kotuwa to go on an elephant safari. It was beautiful in the reserve and we were able to get really up close with the wild elephants.
The next day we hiked up Sigiriya (Lion's Rock), which is an ancient rock fortress that's 660 ft high. King Kasyapa built his palace on top of this rock, which was abandoned after his death and used as a Buddhist monestary until the 14th century. Today it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After the hike we then went to a spice and herbal plantation where we learned a lot about all the different uses of plants as herbal medicine and got our palms read. We also went to the Golden Temple of Dambulla, where a huge Golden Buddha sits in the "Dhamma Chakka" posture. It is the largest Golden Buddha in the world in this position.
The last day we started off going to the Temple of the Tooth. It was built in the 17th century and is home to Buddha's tooth. The tooth is kept in
a two-story inner shrine fronted by two large elephant tusks. The relic rests on a solid gold lotus flower, encased in jewelled caskets that sit on a throne. The temple was amazing and there were loads of people bringing offerings as it is a highly significant place of worship for all Sri Lankans. We then explored Kandy, which is the biggest city in Sri Lanka, and went to some shops.
Today I was back at the turtle project and I got to burry turtle eggs in the new hatchery we've been building. They will be ready to hatch in 53 days and then will go off on their adventure!
