By Polona After a week it was time to pack up and leave Uppuveli and “my husband” (the cook ). After checking with the boys, we left for the Trinco Railway station, only to find out that there are 2 trains daily heading to our destination (Hatton) – we already missed the first one and the next one was only in the evening. So, the best solution for us was to take a bus to Kandy (oh, no, no, no) and then switch buses to get to Hatton (and from there continue to our destination: Dalhousie, a village under Adam's Peak). We calculated we should arrive to Delhousie in the evening, boy, were we wrong. The bus from Trinco to Kandy took ages, even though it's only about 200km between the two. I think it took ... read more

Met Nishal at the KLCC by accident, I arrived at 8:35pm went thru customs around 9:30pm and bummed around for couple hours at the departure lounge, wasn't the only one, Filipinos, Vietnamese, attractive Thai girls and all sorts of people hanging out waiting their flight check in. We got booted out of the Air Asia terminal because they are flogging it, meaning spraying to kill roaches and sorts. I saw Nish walking towards me as I walk out towards the doors and we ended up hanging out together outside in the grassy area chilling until it's check in time. It's a bit of a circus atmosphere for awhile, we checked in and then have to wait for awhile till the immigration office opens up. We had quick breakfast at Dunkin Donuts, my sandwich was expired so ... read more

Yay! Got up early in the morning, ready for a Sri Lankan family reunion in Ratnapura. Before we left Kandy, our couchsurfer-friend Ajith took us around to the Botanical Gardens in Kandy. Again, the prices there were a bit of a rip-off, 650 rupees for foreigners and 100 rupees for locals. Anyways, in we went. No more than 200 metres from the entrance we were suddenly met by two monkeys, sitting peacefully on the path. They looked a bit like the vicious monkeys in Bako national park on Borneo, so we didn't want to get too close. Cute they were though. The first thing of note in the garden was the orchid house. So many different kinds of orchids, some looking like ballerinas, some like butterflies, some like stars - and all different beautiful colours. I ... read more

This is my very first entry! I'm still at home in Yang Ming San, getting ready to take this journey. My first stop is Sri Lanka! This is where I will be meditating for 10 days straight, no speaking, no reading, no writing, just meditating... EEK! It's probably going to be the toughest challenge in my entire life. It sounds slightly boring but in reality its an awakening. I want to open up my mind completely and this is the only way to do it. There are so many reasons why I am going on this journey and all of them make sense to me, but not necessarily to everyone else. There are three big dreams I have that I want t to chase after. I want to be an entrepreneur and surround myself with great ... read more

Monday 3 August - from Visrama Today a decision was made to start a travel blog for family and friends. as I have finally gotten myself online with mobile broadband! OK, it took long enough you may be saying!! This blog will focus on some of the more general experiences ( as distinct from actual work programmes, though these will get a mention) of being here in sri lanka at this somewhat historic time. Following twenty years of civil war, the Government pushed rebel forces from the north of the island and a new era of rehabilitation and renewal began. Sri Lankans enjoy celebrating with fire crackers, flying the national flag and blowing horns etc. in a general and noisy fashion. On a more serious note, there is much rebuilding to be done with several thousand displaced ... read more

Sri Lanka had welcomed me with that mix of hospitality and embarrassment of those who, peaceful by nature, found themselves with a rifle in hand and do not understand why. Negombo Airport was armoured and Colombo city centre was constantly combed by agents (uniformed and not) looking for potential bombers. Only in Israel, I guess, I’ve seen more weapons around. But people here -contrary to what happens in Israel- keep smiling. As to say: no bomb can kill a positive philosophy of life! My not too cautious, little plausible, not at all wise attempt to cross the virtual boundary line that separates (or used to separate, at least) the South in the hands of the government from the Tamil Tigers’ controlled North was a fiasco. In a region where the tourist is by now an extinct ... read more

This weekend I went to Sinharaja Rain Forest and Udawalawa National Park, based in Sri Lanka’s hill country. The drive from Hikkaduwa to Sinharaja takes around 3.5 hours, so we were picked up at 6am. We arrived in good time, paid our entrance fee, and a picked up a guide, who was female, which is highly unusual in Sri Lanka! She was very nice and knowledgeable. As we walked around Sinharaja I kept getting the urge to burst into a chorus of “YMCA” as she kept on saying “and the village peoples use these berries for…” “Village peoples make jaggery from this tree…” I didn’t know that the Village People were rain forest natives!! We did a 6km hike through the rain forest and saw loads of different plants, flowers and trees (obviously!) the guide explained ... read more

As you all are aware, I haven’t blogged for a while. This is down to many, many reasons but can be summed up by the old adage “if you’ve got nothing nice to say, don’t say anything at all”! I’m not going into the reasons here, but feel free to ask me upon my return and I will endeavour to enlighten you! I do however now have something nice to write, so here goes! On Christmas Eve morning I was sat at the top of Adam’s Peak (or Sri Pada, as it is also known) a very large mountain, watching the sunrise. It was magic. We set off at 4pm from Hikkaduwa in a car. Our original car had crashed on the way to pick us up, so we had to get another one at ... read more

After the excitement of the Perihera late last night we manage to summon enough energy to get to the Botanical Gardens bright and early before it gets too hot. The gardens are lush green and filled with surprising sights like couples courting under umbrellas, giant fruit-bat filled trees and weird spindly ancient trees. Next stop is Pinnewala - the famous elephant orphanage which I didn't get a chance to visit on my last visit to Sri Lanka, so I'm more than a little excited! The elephants don't disappoint - they are as adorable as to be expected and we marvel as they use sticks to clean between their toenails and behind their ears. I would quite like to poke their keeper in the eye with his spear though, as he keeps hurting the baby elephant when ... read more

The places we visited on this leg of journey : Maha Saman Devala This is a shrine dedicated to the god Saman. The god Saman is (a Buddhist deity) considered to be the guardian of Ratnapura. When the Portuguese captured Ratnapura, the ancient shrine that stood at this location was destroyed and a Portuguese church was constructed on top of it. When the Kandyan kingdom recaptured Ratnapura, the Portuguese church was destroyed and the shrine was rebuilt. Currently this shrine is a very important place of worship for Buddhists. Bopath Ella is situated at Kuruvita. The fall is like a boo leaf that gives it name.
