28th Feb – I am so tired. We climbed Little Adam’s Peak, it was only 15-minutes walk. It was an amazing view. You were above all the houses and tea factories. There were tea pickers everywhere, you could tell them because of their white bags. Then me and Jonathan went into town with the guesthouse owner. There were white flags everywhere which meant somebody had died. The lady took us into this place and people were crying. There was an 18-year old boy wearing a suit. He was covered in flowers and in a coffin. You could touch him. Sophie

When I got back to the guesthouse the lady told me what had happened. He was the son of her friend, and was picking a flower and his foot got stuck in the mud. He fell into the river he couldn’t swim so he drowned. After we went back into town and bought chicken and treacle. At night we went up a massive mountain where you could see more than Little Adams Peak. When we got back it was 6 o’clock. Then we went to lady’s house to have tea. Jonathan

Pigeon English - assumes somebody of Jonathan’s age is a baby, and consequently this is how he is often referred to. “How is baby today?”, “Baby hungry?” I think he is heartily sick of being cuddled, be it on the train or in the guesthouses, and walking through the street he is frequently patted on the head. He is also the only one to have been blessed by passing Monks. It’s difficult to be the centre of attention but he takes it well.

Oh, and the story is as told by S and J. First paying respects then shopping for dinner. The parents had only thought they were going to buy dinner. A very sad story, even sadder to see young lads putting the white flags our for their mate.
