Ladies, If you are single, feeling fat, ugly, worthless, just go to Sri Lanka, the Boys will love you! and the coversations usually go like this.
Man: Hello Madam, how are you?
Me: Fine thankyou!
Man:Where from?
Me: Australia
Man: Ahhh.. good cricket team!! Do you have Boyfriend for husband?
Me : No, no! ( at a later date my answer changed to yes, im engaged)
Man:Ahhh, why not, such a beautiful lady??
(after this i will get asked a million questions)
"can i have your phone number?"
Me: Sorry, i would rather not. (I had already made this mistake with a Boy who i wanted to drive me around, i got a text every day)
So to all of my male friends back home, you have been my pretend partner at some stage or the other whether married, in a relationship, or single. But i had to remeber which lies i told who, so that i didn't put my foot in it.
Post wedding celebrations and late nights, all the others (except the newly weds) went home and i was left as the third wheel. And so i decided to hire a driver and take myself around
Roadside
Typical road along the west coast. Sri Lanka and give the Bride and Groom some time alone. My first stops were Hikkaduwa, Galle and Unawatuna on the West Coast. Galle was a bit dissapointing, but it was also pouring rain which would make any town look worse than it was. Galle is an old hexagonal shaped fort which holds a little town inside ful of shops, guest houses and temples. I stayed at a place overnight in Unawatuna (where it was also raining). This qaint little bay is beautifull, with aqua water lapping at the shore, and stray puppies playing in the sand. Many Sinhalese say Hikkaduwa and Unawatuna is where all the hippies go, and they may, but i still liked its laid back atmosphere and the possibility that the world could pass me by! The night I spent in Unawatuna was very entertaining. As i had requested a mosqiuto net in my room, these two boys arrived to my room to hang one up, only to discover there was nothing to hang it from. So off they go and return a couple of minutes later with the mangager, a ladder, drill and another two men. I felt really bad about the amount of trouble they
Tsunami aftermath
People are STILL rebuilding after the 2004 boxing day Tsunami. went to to hang this bloody mosquito net. The guy with the drill climbed up the ladder, while his accomplice manned the power point, he twisted the exposed wire from the extension cord coming from the drill and shoved it in the socket, turning the switch on and off with a wooden stick. Mmmmm Safe!
I had considered taking this little trip via a Tuk Tuk, but im so glad i decided not to. At least half or Sri Lanka's roads are in a dreadfull state, it was agony most of the time in a car, let alone in a tuk tuk. We drove futher south where there was heaps fo flooding from the rain, we had to take a huge detour as we made our way up the middle of Sri Lanka to Ella, in the Hill region. Along the way there were frequent stops for king coconuts and Temples, oh and Military checks. My driver, Nihal, was telling me that Buses coming from other towns into new ones are checked upon their arrival. Everyone gets off the bus, their ID and bags are checked, as is the bus... for bombs. The Military presence is significant to prevent
Stick Fisherman
Just outside of unawatuna, but get too close and they charge for photo's. Actually i dont know if they get a chance to fish. attacks from the Tamils (or Tamil Tigers) who live in the North near Jaffna. (If any of this is incorrect, can someone please correct me).
Ella is a quiet little villiage in the Hills of Sri Lanka, there are many waterfalls, Hiking paths etc (not that i tried any of them). I got the best massage in Ella, my driver took me to this "Rip off the tourist" Ayurvedic massge place, where I bargained the price down to basically nothing (Mum, you would have been proud!). Girls, if you ever get the opportunity, get a full body massage with the chest included. Now i know that imagining a girl getting her breats massaged by another girl may be highly erotic to some, but it was very asexual and relaxing. Its amazing how much tension one carries in the chest, it was fantastic.
The winding roads in the hills took me through Nuwara Elia and about a million tea plantaions to arrive in Kandy, Sri Lanka's second Capital. I potted around in Kandy, visited the Botanical Gardens and watched the Kandy Dancers do their thang! One of the best parts of my trip was visting Dambulla Temple and Sigiriya
Fishing Boats
Docked on Unawatuna beach Rock which is futher north than Kandy. I Had to climb up quite a few steps to get to these amazing places, but it was well worth all the pain and mainly, sweat! I stayed in this very cute place just outside of Dambulla that was run by a Father and Son where I got to sample the best food I had tasted in Sri Lanka. They took great pride in their establishment, it was clean and cheap, if anyone wants the name, just let me know. My driver tried to scare me by saying the wild elephants come and attck during the night, Pfft, whatever!
After many hours and Km in the Car i arrived back to Bentota to spend two nights in the sun before i departed Sri Lanka. I will definately return to Sri Lanka one day but here are a few tips.
1) Negotiate a price per day/Km with your driver pre departure and write down the KM's every day if you plan on doing an extended trip.
2) Your driver wil take you places where they get comissions and where the drivers quaters are better. If the place they take you is out
My Driver
This is my Driver, Nihal, and his Nissan Sunny! of your price range, just tell them, its your holiday! Most fo the time it will be cheaper to go to a guest house and hire two decent rooms, than spend a night in some overpriced hotel.
3)Tell restaurants etc that you dont need soft curry. I usually said i liked it med-hot curry and they got it right every time. Otherwise you get this yellow crap that tastes like something you'd give fussy children.
4) Smile, it gets you out of everything!
If you need the name of a driver, please contact me, i am happy to refer you to someone.
Next stop... Bangkok!
