Christmas in Seoul
View from my window... Wow, what a year!
2012 has proved to be full of adventures for me here in Asia!
I just realized I haven't written a blog since August, so Christmas vacation seems like the perfect time for an update.
The last few months have flown by. Christmas in my school was a riot! The kids began talking about it mid-November, and didn't stop until December 25th. We had the privilege of receiving a visit from Santa himself, on December 21st. One of my older students aptly pointed out, "I know he's not real. The
real Santa comes to my house through the chimney." (This was said in complete seriousness). Either way, most of the kids seemed to be in complete and utter
awe of Santa when he bumbled through the door into each classroom. Some students were left speechless for about ten seconds, staring up at him, frozen, with their mouths ajar.
I had the awkward encounter of meeting Santa in the bathroom that morning, where he was finishing his costume. I shook his hand saying "Santa, right?" (haha). It took about five minutes to find out his actual name was Steve, from England, who was a part-time

To finish off the school year, all the teachers were treated to an amazing Christmas dinner in Gangnam. Besides the inevitable awkward moments when the boss was trying to persuade everyone to have shots of Soju, the night was an ample success. It was a great way to start off my Christmas vacation.
Christmas break has been a much-needed time of relaxation. We spent an evening skating at City Hall. There were hundreds of Koreans skating with us, Christmas songs playing, all while under the beautiful lights of the massive Christmas tree; and of course, a bright red cross being displayed at the top of the tree.
We spent two days going to museums- first to the biggest art gallery in Seoul, then to a "Vaticani Exhibit" and finally, one of my favourite artists of all time- Van Gogh. Seeing his artwork over two years while in Paris inspired me. I should really pick up a paintbrush again one of these days...
As for Christmas day- that was spent cooking up a storm and eating, and napping and drinking wine. I received some videos from my family during their Christmas

Beautiful and cold Christmas nights dinner- which almost made me feel like I was back at home again.
Finally, New Years Eve was spent in Gangnam at a beautiful restaurant. There were fireworks right outside the building which we ran outside to see at midnight, then raced back into the warmth as it was negative 20 degrees outside that night!
I can't believe another year has come and gone. I never would have imagined I would be spending it in Seoul- but alas, here I am. As I type this, I'm sipping on green tea and looking out my window at the snowy rooftops. It doesn't get much better than this...
