So today we had our weekly trip to Gymshule. Before we left, one of my students gave me a packet of something and I asked my co-teachers what it was, and In-Suk said, “Chocolate, but not good.” So she thinks it’s terrible, so later, I may have to try it. I’ve only met one bar of chocolate that I didn’t like, so as a chocolate connoisseur, I must try it. On the way there, as the weekly occurrence goes, we had 14 kids and four adults in the car and of course, we almost die about three times. We get to the building and shove every child in the elevator and head up. This week, the instructor had the kids running toward a mat that was upright and having them try to scale the vertical mat and sit on top of it. Strange? Yes. Dangerous? Also. There are many things that we question while at Gymshule. I wonder who thinks up these games and feats of strength and then why they don’t even consider the dangers that these activities could pose. It boggles my mind. I once thought “common sense” was pretty common. Now, I know otherwise. After we were finished
at the shule, we got all the kids downstairs and while loading them up into the van, I turn around to see one of my boys’ bare butts! I then saw In-Suk standing next to him supporting him with her leg. He was PEEING on the SIDE of the BUILDING!! I took a double take and was freaking out, but when I told Pauline what had just happened when she got out of the building, she looked at me and laughed and said, “And no one even batted an eye, did they?” They sure didn’t! Apparently, that is normal for children and drunken men. I feel like I’m a frat party. The little boy at this time was turned around with his wiener just hanging in the breeze, and I’m yelling at him to pull up his pants and get into the van. His mom is the helper in Pauline’s classroom, so she was even there. No one seemed to think it was odd except for me! The whole ride home, I was stunned since I was thinking about what was going to shock me next! The peeing thing was really hard to believe, but believe me, it definitely happened!
I went home for lunch and on the way back to school, I decided to make a video entitled, “Crossing the Street.” It is soon to be in a theatre near you, but until then, you can catch it here at the top of the page. Don’t worry, I don’t die and I do this ritual about 4 or more times per day.
Back at school, Joni had returned from her vacation and brought in some neat stuff. She had beautiful scarves for the Korean teachers and moon cakes for the staff to try. They were ornately decorated and they were supposed to have an egg yolk in the middle of each cake. When I arrived, they hadn’t found any yolks, and Joni really wanted to see one, so I opened up the big one and there were two yolks in it! I cut it up into eight pieces and tried one. Needless to say, I didn’t enjoy it that much. My face in the pictures pretty much says it all! I can’t even describe the taste. It was chewy but gritty, and just not good. Joni said that she can get better ones in China Town in
LA! So, note to self: Don’t buy moon cakes from Hong Kong.
After school, we decided that we needed to go out for a drink, even though it wasn’t Thursday. So we went and I got some pizza to eat for dinner and they had some fried chicken. I had a Pepsi since I really didn’t feel like drinking anything. We played some pool and just enjoyed each other’s company. It was a good time. I still wasn’t feeling good with my lungs and coughing, so when it started to get smoky, I called it an early night and I went home to bed.

The above address is a really informative slideshow. Back home, and even here I use canvas bags to carry my groceries. Not only do they hold more, but they’re easier to carry and they can be reused! So, it’s a win-win-win situation! I encourage you to just look through your closets and find old canvas bags and just keep them in your car. Here in Korea, anywhere you go, it’s between 100 Won and 500 Won for each bag that you use!
