Who could imagine a life so familiar half way around the world? Almost 2 full days of traveling, I made it to my destination, Jeju Island, South Korea, to find coffee shops and bakeries on every corner. South Korea is not the world's 11th leading economy for nothing, as I've quickly come to find. Expecting India round II, I was initially confused at the lack of smell and poverty, as well as the general cleanliness. After a few weeks here, I sometimes forget I'm even in a foreign country. Sure, I still have to point and guess at menus and restaurants, and the grocery store remains an adventure where I hope the "soybean oil" I purchased is not really dish detergent, but in general, I get by. I already have an apartment, the most high-tech one thus far (read: security cameras and door codes...I was pleased just to have a window after my previous digs in the US), a bank account (containing a whopping 10 USD), job (glorified babysitter and maker-upper of grammer and English), and wonderful friends (not Harry, Hermione, and Ron this time). I am at the point where I both cannot believe I have been here 3 weeks already, and cannot imagine this hasn't been my home for a year, and a home is what Jeju is quickly becoming. While I sometimes feel that I've just moved to a foreign city in the US, there is something so refreshing about being in a new country. My senses have been awakened, as well as my analytical skills, and each experience receives the thorough examination that all deserve. Life, in short, is how is should be.
