Welcome to Love Land!
Adult themed Art Park A few days of "Island life" seemed to be just what we all needed after almost a year in a massive city like Seoul. Jeju Island is the "Hawaii of Korea", with beautiful beaches, volcanic mountains, palm trees and hot humid weather.
Saturday, JUNE 28, 2008 The weekend was great! Although when we arrived there were monsoon rains! So we got checked into our hotel, and decided that we should be adventurous and go out in the rain anyways!
In the pouring rain we made our way to Jeju's largest attraction, where the three brothers came out from the ground and left three holes. We would beg to differ on the excitement factor at this historical marvel. There are better things to see and do on this amazing island!
We thought eating lunch in a dry place would be our next best bet. E-Mart's food court was a huge let down, yet Sam was successful at miming "bladder infection" to the Pharmacist, she got some meds. Luckily we found a wicked noodle shop across the street from E-Mart, we were saved!
The question of what to do in the rain was still plaguing
us, but I'd seen a sign for the JimJilBang (THE SAUNA!) Dale went off to the men's area and us girls went to our area with plans to meet in the common area (wearing t-shirts and shorts!) an hour later. We relaxed in maybe 8 different temperature pools as well as the sauna rooms.
Finally we were all clean and we ate our snacks together in the common area, laid on the floor and had a nap. Sam and Romi went into the salt sauna, where you can bury yourself in rock salt and watch TV. It was too hot for me!! When we woke up it was sunny! YAY.
Went to meet up with a friend from high school who had just moved to Jeju a month ago. We went to Love Land together. This was one of the most fun things we did the whole time. It was really funny, not tacky at all, and we thought- really well done! Many tourists go there as well as honeymooners. Jeju is supposed to be the honeymoon island of Korea. (many of the couples like to wear couples outfits- they are often wearing the exact same thing, right
down to the sneakers, or they are at least matching.)
After Love Land we went to Stephanie's apartment to have some drinks and hang out before we hit up the Jeju City foreigner scene. We went to a bar called the Blue Agave and it was definitely pretty busy! There are about 300 foreigners that live on the island, of course, they were not all at this one bar😉 The four of us were really exhausted since combined we had about 6 hours of sleep the night before.
Sunday, JUNE 29th, 2008 Got a taxi to the airport (so cheap!) and hoped on a bus that goes south to the other side of the island (4$, 45 minute bus ride) to JungMun Beach. We skipped right on past the Teddy Bear Museum (pass!!) and got our first glimpses or the most southern part of Korea.
It was pretty exciting to see clear blue water with the sun shining and fresh air! We couldn't get down to the beach fast enough! There weren't too many people, but lots of surfers- definitely some wicked waves!
Sam, Steph and Dale went swimming, but Romi and I
enjoyed the sun on the beach.
Hungry for some western food, we got a taxi to Gecko's (there is one in Seoul too) where we all enjoyed fish and chips, burgers and chicken sandwiches on their patio. We thought it would be fun to eat at both their locations... we're cool. we know.
Maybe the best part of the waterfalls was when Dale and I got a youth ticket (under 24) and were able to rub it in Sam and Romi's face! The first waterfall that we saw was Jeongbang Falls that drop directly into the rocky ocean.
The second falls we went to were Cheonjiyron Falls, both near Seogwipo. This one we had to walk a little further inland to see the falls. Many Koreans were doing their typical no smiling pose with the falls as the background and wearing couples outfits! (we got our discount at this place too!)
Took a taxi back to the other side of the island, five us piled in, five dollars each. We drove past Halla Mountain, the highest peak in Korea at 1,950m. I would have loved to done a hike, but there just wasn't enough time!
Back in Jeju City we got some Mr. Pizza, walked around for a bit and we were off to bed to catch our flight back the next morning before work!
WE LOVE YOU JEJU!!
