The wine train is something Jess' mom told her about right after she arrived. Unfortunately in the madness that is jetlag she completely forgot about it until a friend reminded her, mentioning it would be a fun trip. That was in August. It took a while to get everything together, and it took some doing to make it work, but on Halloween, a group of 9 of us got together and finally made the journey. It meant having to start very early in the morning (catching a bus from our town at 7am!) as the train left Seoul station at 9, and we were advised to be there by 8:30 at the latest. We had a little seating situation (we were positioned in a line of tables going down the car rather than in a group ... read more

Hello again! September has been quite the month for us in S. Korea, we have been able to relax into our lives, check out some areas of Seoul, visit with Jess' friend who came to see her parents and have fun with our friends here. Although the month began the way August had left off - hot and somewhat humid - the weather became progressively cooler and the last weeks actually began to get a little cold at night. In school we spent the entire month (minus the first week) working with 5th graders, so a few shots from those classes are also included. It was nice to relax into the rhythm of the weeks although the school has been giving us a bit of trouble lately... we'll let you know how that turns out. At ... read more

Hello all! It's taken some time to get this together what with leaving for China right after it happened and then coming back and planning for summer camp plus the 2nd and 6th grade curriculums but better late than never, right? This is really just a run down of the teacher's union trip we took the two days before we left for Beijing. It was a great opportunity for us to get to know some of the other teachers in our school (as well as the principle and vice principle) and see a LOT of Korea in a short period of time. The events leading up to the trip made us question whether or not it would be worth it but now we wonder when the next one will be held! *We decided to write this ... read more

Note: If you found this looking for advice / information on coming to Korea, check out Jess' other blog specificially made for just that purpose: http://kimchiquestions.blogspot.com/ Hello again! It's taken some time to put this together making sure we were able to give you some more information about our new home. We know you've heard of South Korea - in fact, you've probably heard about it on the news lately in the form of a man who whooped Tiger in golf. Yes, Korea came into the spotlight for taking the world by surprise. I personally wouldn't be too shocked if this became a pattern over the next few years as Korea is holding quite the hand. (I am talking about South Korea of course, not the North which is inevitably all over the news & usually ... read more

Hello it's Fran. Sorry it's taken so long to write something here. I've been busy over here settling in and spending so much time at the school. When i have had free time over here it's been spent exploring the area, eating weird and wonderful food, meeting people and trying not to get rained on in between. Things over here are going well and i'm sure they'll get even better. I just wanted to quickly share with you some of things we've come across so far. Food To start with the food is excellent. In the beginning going out to eat was a guessing game followed by a spicy surprise. Since then then we have been able to pick the food we want almost every time. Despite not knowing what I was getting to eat there ... read more

Hello all! So sorry it has taken a while to get this up, we have been pretty busy attempting to settle in over here. We did sent a quick email out to a few people not long after we'd arrived so some of this may repeat, but it will also be added to... As of now we still have no phone in our apt., no internet, no wireless in someone else's apt to latch onto and haven't figured out how to call home yet. We will get a mobile phone for sure once we have our alien registration cards which we went to get Wednesday. I don't know how much a mobile will help all of you on the other side of the world, but it will at least be a direct line to us if ... read more

Our flat would not have made a very good ark. Since coming here, most of our problems have had to do with water (mool). This is a story about our first two days in South Korea. It was a bit warm after we returned from our first venture into Hopyeong so we turned on our ac which was great for a few minutes until it started to drip on our faux wood floors. We thought the intelligent response was the shut it off. The air conditioner's response was to send out a torrent of water. We scrambled for towels, dirty clothes - anything to sop up the water. No sense losing our security deposit on the first day! Eventually the flood subsided to a dribble. (It still does it everytime we use the ac so mostly ... read more

This begins our adventure... Jess leaves tomorrow (Wednesday) from Boston, flying to Heathrow. Fran will meet her there in the morning & from there we hop on a flight bound for Dubai. Unfortunately we'll be lucky if we see more than the airport (some sand would be interesting!), before getting on another flight to Seoul. We should have someone waiting to pick us up at the airport and bring us to either a) our new apt. or b) some form of temporary house such as a hotel until we move into our apt. Either way, it will be exciting. We will be back with lots of info as soon as possible! Since this is short & sweet, I thought we might include something humorous that I came across on a website the other day concerning the ... read more

Hello Everyone! This is kind of a trial run but I also wanted to put some general information about South Korea & more specifically where we're going on here as I know lots of people have questions. Here goes... First of all, we're moving to SOUTH Korea. And second, the specific place we're moving to is called Namyangju (possibly Namyangju City, but we'll have to get back to you on that one). Actually I should slightly amend that and say this is where our school is, though it is very unlikely we will be far from the school. Everyone seems to be w/in a 10 minute walking distance or less. *Refer to above map to see location in relation to Seoul. From the Korea Sparkling website: "Namyangju is located in the center of Gyeonggi-do next to ... read more
