On September of 2013, my father had to go on a business trip to Singapore. I begged him to take me, and he agreed. I was excited beyond words, I had never been to Asia before. We started our trip by flying to Los Angeles, where we would fly to Tokyo in a Singapore Airlines A380, the biggest passenger plane in the world. This was actually one of the most exciting parts of the trip, the plane was huge and so majestic, it was a dream come true to be able to fly on one of those. The flight was 12 hours long, but I enjoyed it because the staff was friendly and the food was surprisingly good, they served Japanese food. Arriving to Tokyo was somewhat unreal, and we had to take a train to get to the city. On the train ride, I started to see the outskirts of Tokyo which were incredibly colorful. It was full of amusement parks and tiny houses. When we got to the hotel, we just slept. The next day, my dad and I met with one of his business partners, who had also brought his son along, Erick. That day we went to
Tsukiji fish market to look for some good sushi. I regret not wearing shorts that day because the weather was incredibly hot and humid, and it was worse because we had to walk everywhere. The market was huge (it is the biggest fish market in the world, it takes up several streets), they sold a little bit of everything, not just fish, and I would've liked to wander along for a few more hours, but we were hungry. We found a really small sushi restaurant that had only a sushi bar and four or five small tables. The staff were fascinated with us because we came from Mexico, and I overheard them telling every costumer, in Japanese, that we were from Mexico. Everyone waved hello to us and wanted a picture. After that, we went to a temple in Asakusa, it was full of tourists but it still had a peaceful environment and a religious aura. The next day we wandered along Shibuya, it is the area similar to Times Square in New York. It is full of stores, both Japanese and mainstream fashion. My dad wanted to go to see sumo fights, and when we tried to find the
arena, we got monumentally lost. A Japanese man was friendly enough to take us there, which I found surprising. We entered the sumo arena and it was very crowded. It had no seats, just little squares boxes with small mattresses. Th fights were amusing, and I confess I had no idea of what was going on, but I had a really good time. Our 8-hour flight to Singapore departed the next day in the morning, and right after we got there, we had to go to the Mexican embassy. I was so tired that I could barely stay awake, but it was a good experience because I met the ambassador. Our hotel was right next to Chinatown, it is called Park Royal Pickering, and it is the best one I have ever stayed in. Next day, while my dad was working, an aunt that lives there picked me up and took me sightseeing around Chinatown. We went to a buddhist temple, which I found very confusing because nobody spoke English, just Chinese. We also wandered around the markets, which were pretty much like an ordinary tianguis in Mexico. The food they sold was very strange, for example frog, crocodile and
snake beef. Of course, I didn't try any of it. I spent the next couple of days doing similar things around Singapore, and then my dad decided to make a day trip to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. As soon as the flight arrived, we took a train to Batu Caves, a hindu temple built inside a cave. It was really beautiful and I loved the way the statues and shrines matched with the natural surroundings. The cave was full of monkeys that sometimes stole water bottles and food. I saw a monkey eating an ice cream cone. Later, we returned to Kuala Lumpur and went to the Petronas Towers. They were impressive and huge, I found them beautiful and striking. We could not go up to the last floor, but we stayed inside the towers and ate there in a sushi restaurant. We returned to Singapore and went right to bed. The next couple of days would be the most exciting of my life because my dad had gotten tickets to see the Formula 1 Grand Prix. Since I am a Formula 1 mega-fan, I had the time of my life. The sound of the engines, though deafening, was beautiful
to me. It made me feel so excited and at some point, I wanted to cry because of the excitement. The race was amazing and my favorite pilot, Kimi Räikkönen won third place. After the F1 event, we were due to return to Mexico. This trip was the best one I have ever been on, especially because I went with my father, my favorite travel companion.
