Asia can be a bit of a culture shock, but that was not the case with Singapore. Singapore is really westernized for a Asian country and it is beautiful and very clean. My first thoughts was clean, hot and organized.
At the airport i got a shuttle service to my hotel. It was easy to organize and was inexpensive. The staff at the counters can all speak English, that was a plus. After booking in I went exploring. The area Little India were I was staying had a lot of little shops and restaurants. Seeing that it was lunch time I stopped at The Star Inn Cafe. I did not know what to order, but the waiter, that could speak perfect english, suggested a dish. The food was delicious and the beer was cold. The price was affordable and the portions was large and best off all is I got a sweet tea for free every time i went there.
The next day was spent going to the Gardens by the Bay. The Gardens by the Bay is a 101 hectare park in the centre of Singapore. The park consist of three waterfront gardens: Bay South Garden, Bay Garden
and Bay Central Garden. The gardens was truly beautiful. I have not seen anything like it in a western country.
In the park there is also two conservatories: The Flower Dome and The Cloud Forest. The Flower Dome consist of flowers and plants from mild, dry climates and feature plants found in the Mediterranean and other semi-arid tropical regions like Australia, South Africa and South America. The Flower Dome features seven different gardens.
The Cloud Garden replicate the cool moist conditions found in the tropical mountain regions that are 1000 meters and 3000 meters above sea level. The plants found in The Cloud Forest are from South-East Asia, Middle and South America. In the middle of the dome is a "cloud mountain". You can go up the elevator and walk down the stairs.
From the two domes I preferred The Cloud Forest, because it was more impressive. It had the "cloud mountain" and a big waterfall that makes for some really nice pictures. There is a entrance fee if you want to go to the domes, but I think it is money well spend.
From everything at The Gardens at the Bay , the Supertrees was
my favourite. They are metal tree-like structures that average between 25 meters and 50 meters. There is a elevated walkway between the trees for a better view. From the trees and walkway you have a great view of Singapore and the impressive Marina Bay Hotel. To go up the Supertrees there is a small entrance fee.
The Gardens by the Bay is something everyone has to see. Even if you only go up the Supertrees, because the view is out of this world.
On the second morning we went for the famous Singapore breakfast, runny eggs with jam toast. I did not really know what to expect. It was different, but surprisingly very tasty. To have this famous breakfast and coffee is cheap. So try it and see what you think.
After breakfast it was time for a walk in the city. Singapore has great landmarks that you have to check out and it has amazing skyline. After lunch we went window shopping.
On the third day I went up to the Marina Bay Hotel observatory deck. From there you have a great view of Singapore. I just have to say it was expensive to only
go up, walk around and take picture, but if I did not do it I would have regret it.
China Town was next on the list. As soon as you stepped of the train, you feel like you stepped in to a different world. The rest of the city is modern. China town gives you a glimpse of how things must have been here a very long time ago.
My first tea ceremony took place in China Town, Singapore. When you took your seat you pick the tea you would like to drink. All the teas have different prices so pick something that fits your budget. The first cup of tea is made by the your hostess. Then it is your turn to show your skills. I really like it.
Back in the market there is a restaurant that sell the famous chilli crab. You pick the crab you want because you pay per weight. The dish comes with a bib and believe me you need it, it gets messy. There is no polite way to eat this dish. If you are finish you will be up to your elbows in crab.
The last day we
went to Universal Studios. If you go in the week and not in peak season it is not very busy, so you have a lot of time to enjoy our favourite ride over and over again.
If you are looking for a new destination or just passing through this city has something for everyone. If you have time stay a couple nights and enjoy what the city has to over. From budget travellers to big spenders the city has it all.
