Singapore
The night before Singapore we had a logistical pre-port like we always do. However this one explained a lot about the laws and how people could get caned or hung. It made a lot of people rethink their plans on going out for Halloween.
Sunday
The first day we got here Halloween! It was so much fun. I woke up to have breakfast and we were just getting pulled into the harbor. I saw us go from open oceans to trees and skyscrapers. It was so interesting. After breakfast we all got our passports and I attended the diplomatic meeting. 3 girls and I didn’t end up getting off the ship till about 10:30. After we went through immigration and customs it was about 11. We took a taxi and headed off to the botanical gardens. We walked around those till 1 and saw the most beautiful orchids ever. It was nice and peaceful. After that we went and got lunch. I was still full from breakfast so I didn’t eat. We then split up into two and two planning to meet again later about an hour later. Rachel and I got ice-cream then went to star bucks for
some internet. The other two went shopping. While at star bucks we ran into two guys and started talking, they were officers in the marines, and one graduated from CSU. We found it to be such a small world. By 2 o’clock we were walking along Clark Quey. It was just a place that had happy hour and food restaurants from all over the world. We stopped at a local place and got a beer. I was sort of hungry but didn’t want to eat a lot because I was going on a night safari. So I just 3 oysters. SO GOOD! While finishing up our beer a guy came over to us and asked if we 4 girls wanted to join the 4 guys and have another beer with them. We said ok sure. While talking to them we found out they were in the navy. It was a fun talk. But I had to about 30 min into the conversation to make it back to the boat for my night safari.
We took a 30 min bus ride to the night safari/zoo. When we first got there we were shown to dinner. It was a buffet. Since
India I was so sick of buffets, but this food was actually amazing. They had sushi, octopus, rice, chicken kabobs, and spicy chicken. It was a great meal that actually made me full. After dinner, Pat, Alan, Vince and I got in the last row of the open shuttle to go on the night safari. We saw lions, hyenas, bears, deer, tigers and many more including giraffes and elephants. But between long runs of animals they had people dressed up in costumes trying to scare us. Being in the back they would hop on or make crazy noises at us. They didn’t really scare us. After the tram ride around we got to walk around the path, that’s when they popped out and scared me the most. It was very fun.
After getting back from the safari we all went out. It was very expensive to buy alcohol so I only had a beer. After taking the subway to Clark Quey again Emi and I got separated from all the guys. I was bummed because I really wanted to hang out with them but we ran into Brian, Michael and Josh. We walked around for a while but I
had a headache so Brian, Rachel and I headed back. Once I got back to the ship I saw that I had a note saying I had a package. I was super excited; I totally forgot my mom sent me a something! When I opened it, it was candy! A perfect Halloween gift! There were jolly ranchers, lollipops, hot tamales, Hershey hugs and sour patch kids. I then went to bed knowing I was getting up at 7:30 in the morning.
Monday
Today was a day where I had nothing really planned. I did the things that Liz and her sister recommended. And since everything was so expensive I decided not to do too much. There were things I found interesting and wanted to do, but no one wanted to do them with me. I knew I would be safe, just because it was Singapore, but I didn’t want to take any risks. So after breakfast Brad and I went to find some internet. We both had to look up class info and talk to some people. It was nice to talk to my roomie and my brother for a bit. By 9:30 I was back on the boat
trying to figure out what to do. Kristin, Kelly, Michael, Newman and I all went out. We went to the college National University of Singapore to look for a sweat shirt. It was fun to be a college kid on a different college campus. After that we went and got lunch at Chinatown. We got way too much for the 5 of us, but it was still very good. It was now 1 o’clock and we didn’t know what to do. We talked about going to little India but I definitely didn’t want to go there so we all headed back towards the boat. There was internet for Kristin and Kelly and some stores which I needed to buy stuff. We got ice-cream then walked around the mall. I bought a t-shirt, and the typical shot glass, postcard and magnet. I was ready to head back to the ship. I didn’t know how long customs would take and didn’t want to receive dock time. I was back by 4 when dock time was 5.
Once on the ship I colored a little then took a nap till dinner. At 8 oclock we the ship was pulling out. The city was
all lit up and it was beautiful. I was very sad to be leaving; Singapore was so awesome, and very interesting to me. But I am super excited to be in Vietnam and Cambodia in less than 2 days.
Singapore was very different from India. There was no trash over the roads, people knew how to use lanes and it was a city-state. There were massive sky rises everywhere. They were tall apartment complexes. I got to see a lot of things that pre-port told me. Not many cars because they were so expensive. Plus Singapore was only 26 miles by 14 miles. I also learned that the prime minister of Singapore makes 2.7 million a year and donates it all. Plus, 30 richest politicians live in Singapore.
